Query asp site through an application

Hi all,

What are the basic steps that I need to follow to fire a query to a website running using asp.net.

The aim is to extend the website and provide a better UI and search results to the customers.

Mainly the application would be logging into the portal, search for items and add these to a cart. Once read proceed with the order.

All actions are already available on the website but the UI is not that good
