How to add a new SQL column using VB.net

Our customers need to add 4 new columns to an existing MS SQL data table. Can this be done using VB.net code within our application? Or is this a bad idea?

Most customers don't know how to use SSMS to run a query which we will provide to them.

Any suggestions?
