reed x markers in sqlm data source query test results

I am configuring a VS 2015 sql datasource for a asp.net web formsite. the data souce is connecting to an as400 database using a odbc conection. when I test the sql code only red x marker are in the columns



or I get <Binary data> in the query builder results





What does this mean and how can it be fixed? I access other tables the same way and data is returned correctly
