Win XP Security Update (KB943460) won't install

Have tried unsuccessfully several times to install Win XP Security Update
(KB943460) via Automatic Updates and via the Windows Update site (on a
WinXPsp2 Home machine with Windows Installer 3.1). Based on the info
provided below, can anyone help?

Info from Windows Update site re failed installation indicates Error Code:
0x800705AA (which appears to refer to insufficient resources, but that
actually shouldn't be a problem with 512K RAM and nothing else runnning).

I have also appended the content of the KB943460.log below.

(I had a serious problem a while back that prevented 30+ critical updates
and installation of other programs for months and kept pointing to
insufficient resources, permissions, etc., but finally traced that to a modem
driver problem that went away when I removed the modem from the machine.
Although I still suspect the machine is not quite right because of a few
other glitches, I haven't had any similar problems installing other programs
or Windows Updates since then until now, so I'm thinking this is something
different.)

Yes, I tried rebooting and then installing KB943460 before my first post -
did not work :-(

(I'm also noticing a LOT of others in the newgroup having problems AFTER
installing KB943460 update, so I'm hoping that solving my update problem
won't end up producing other problems - but KB943460 seemed to install fine
on my Tablet PC without any problems afterward.)

Sorry to be so long in responding - have been jammed with other things.

(unless you mean something that might run at startup).

....haven't tried Safe Mode yet (and can't right now because have other
things running that prevent reboot right now --- but will try later).

However, why would Safe Mode be necessary? ...and is that common? (I hadn't
run into it before.) --- For example, might something that runs at startup,
like Avast! Antivirus, interfere in Normal Mode? Other updates haven't
required starting in Safe Mode, but I installed Avast! AFTER those 30+
critical updates that wouldn't install before.

(Although, believe me, I tried Safe Mode and everything else under the sun
during the months I spent trying to solve the previous update problem,
including a few weeks of back and forth with Microsoft Online Windows Update
Support. But that problem seemed to go away when I removed a modem & modem
driver that I discovered would cause spontaneous BSOD reboots during registry
searches, etc. Don't know how that and the update failures were connected
(maybe the driver was interfering with resources somehow ???), but after
removing the modem, all of the 30+ critical updates installed fine without
Safe Mode.

I included my Windows Update log in the original post because I saw an MS
Windows Update MVP request the log for what sounded like a similar situation.
Does it contain anything illuminating?

Sure I meant those applications running at startup. Check msconfig and
the "System Start" tab there.

Cause some applications running at startup may prevent the propper
installation of the update.

This is the only update that fails to download (thru WSUS) on all
clients and servers. All others are successful. This is driving me
nuts. I do not have URL scan anywhere. I downloaded this update on my
pc from microsoft website and it downloaded and installed with no
problem at all. The error code under status of clients is 0X80244019
download failed. Any tips?

Have you been able to solve the problem in the meantime by disableing the
applications running at Windows start (via msconfig e.g.)?

I've researched for someone else a similar issue and that's why I took a
closer look into your KB943460.log once again:

That's included three or four times in your log file. I've found a previous
thread in this very newsgroup dealing with the same issue - including a

Additionally the very last entry in your KB943460 indicates a related issue
to your previous update installation struggle you've talke about too. That's
diferent from the previous error messages, although it's most likely the same
issue:
