It finally hit me.
Both my IDE DVDRW and CDRW drivers don't read DVD's and CD's any longer.
I have tried to apply the deletion of upper filters and lower filters in the
registry but I don't have such keys.
I can read my DVD's and CD's using the filemanager ZTreewin, however.
I can burn them with Nero.
But I can't read them with Windows Explorer.
Device manager shows no problems.
Any ideas?

The Flue? or the you can't read cd's or dvd in windows explorer?
I tried mine, everything here works even movies.
Try uninstalling that "new" burning software you loaded the other day the
open source one, can't remember the name of it.

Re: Not working CD/DVD "flue" got me

Hugh,
That is my main suspect, Infrarecorder.
Problem is that I downloaded the *.zip version, equipped with no installer.
I just copied the file/folder structure to C:\Program Files and there is no
uninstaller program/Control Panel entry to uninstall it.
I have now downloaded the *.msi version, with embedded installer.
I will install it on top of the "manual" installation and see if I can
uninstall it in a nice way.
If that fails I will try uninstalling both drivers in device manager and
redetecting them after boot.
I am at work now, supposedly working, and cannot try those options but will
check (probably) as soon as I get back home.
Second problem is that later on I have an appointment with my cardiologist
(I am not kidding) and I am afraid that failing to recover my drives might
alter my heart parameters!
:)

Re: Not working CD/DVD "flue" got me

Hugh,
Ain't got no real flue, though I am actually going to the cardiologist due
to an angina pectoris I suffered one month ago.
It seems that I have an obstruction in one (or more) of the blood vessels
that follow the ventricle and will have to fly to Buenos Aires (2000 miles)
in order to receive proper treatment (catheter, etc.). A short forced
vacation that will be well received (by me).
The "flue" thing was just a metaphore referring this outbreak plaguing
CD/DVD drives in many Vista installations.
It is just a matter of reading the Vista hardware NG.
Many recurring posts like mine, without the flue thing.
:)

Re: Not working CD/DVD "flue" got me

Hugh,
Uninstalled both optical drives, reboot. Didn't work.
Uninstalled Infrarecorder, reboot. Didn't work.
System restore, one week ago before installing infrarecorder, reboot.
That did it!
I can use my CD/DVD's again.

Re: Not working CD/DVD "flue" got me

Hi Carlos,

My DVD drive is still working in Explorer, and I've been using InfraRecorder
for ages. Weirdness abounds in Vista at times ;-)

When do you fly to BA for treatment? Hope all goes well.

Re: Not working CD/DVD "flue" got me

I'll be flying to Buenos Aires in a week or so.
What can I have done wrong with Infrarecorder?
Maybe the "manual" install (without the installer)
Maybe because I started it the first time while Nero 7 was running?
Who knows.
I will wait a little before giving it a shot again.

Re: Not working CD/DVD "flue" got me

Thanks, Hugh!
Thanks to you now I know the exact spelling of the "spring" (a.k.a. Stent or
Stint) in English.
I am now 56, weighing 26 pounds less than 4 years ago, but still trying to
reduce it more from my current 206 pounds.

Re: Not working CD/DVD "flue" got me

Well, my friend - if you install Infrarecorder while Nero is running, that
would be a possible suspect. Honestly, we are all doing this more or less
all the time, but two app's accessing the same devices? However, running
them at the same time should not have an impact at all.

----------

The Doctor walks up to a patient saying:

"Ah, Mr. Benson - we have good news for you, and a bit of bad news. The bad
news is that we will have to remove your leg - the good news is that a bloke
in the next ward wants to buy your shoe."

-----------

Cheer up Carlos, and try and enjoy your forced vacation. I bet all our
thoughts will be with you!

Re: Not working CD/DVD "flue" got me

Carlos:
I wish you the best of luck with a full and fast recovery. I'll be 61
next month so I understand the frustration or aggravation felt when the time
needed to recover is longer than when you are young. I'm doing okay working
part-time while having chemo-therapy two times in three weeks, just tired
all the time and no energy for grandchildren. Have a great day.

Re: Not working CD/DVD "flue" got me

I think Carlos is the youngster here...

And I wish him all the best for a quick and full recovery. It won't be the
same with him offline for a bit. Of course, for all we know he's already
negotiated for a high speed wireless connnection while he's in the hospital.

Re: Not working CD/DVD "flue" got me

Thanks everybody for your kind concepts.
It really feels like this virtual family is more and more united each day
that passes.

As for the wireless connection I am checking if the "stent" thing they are
going to put inside me has an upgrade to wireles wi-fi via neural connection
to my eyes and fingers.
That way I will be able to "click" in the air and browse the web with my eyes.
:)
Impossible now, but maybe a reality in the future, before the Vulcans make
their first landing on Earth and meet Zephram Cochrane.
