Rescue disk abandons me

Start over. You say it boots (you select it) if the repair CD is inserted.
It will not boot if the CD is not inserted. What happens? Errors? Anything
logged?

Correct -- it boots if I insert the repair CD and select Q (quit). If I
boot without the repair disk it goes to grub where I can select boot
linux or "Other", in which case it defaults to the Restore program on
the primary hard drive.

There used to be a Windows XP boot capability on the 1st HD but, for
some reason, it can no longer see that.
