I run a background app in VB Net to check for posted updates, and if there is one display a form with advice etc. My current solution uses a Windows Form as the basis with the form initially set to minimised so it's not on-screen, and although it does the job OK the momentary change of focus when there isn't an update to report and it has to be closed is distracting, not really acceptable.
What is the preferred way to create a truly un-noticed background app that is only seen when there is something to report, and is able to close itself without any indication to the user when there isn't?
