IE Icon missing on Desktop

I mistakenly deleted the IE Icon on my desktop. It still shows up on other
users of the same machine. I tried to remove/install windows components but
that doesn't work. I'm running Win XP Prof SP2.

Hi Fred,

Right click on your Desktop and select Properties. Click the Display tab
and then click the Customize Desktop button. On the General tab, check
IE and OK out of everything. If it's checked (for some strange reason),
uncheck it, OK out, go back in and recheck it.

-> Right click on blank space of the desktop
-> Select Display Properties
-> Click on Desktop Tab
-> Select Customize desktop
-> Under General Tab, put a checkbox in Internet Explorer.
-> Then click on OK and Apply and then OK.

This does not work for IE 6 on Windows xp sp2 after installing windows update
kb943460. What you will find is that if you go to the place you describe
below, IE is no longer an option under Customize desktop. This option will
only return if you uninstall kb943460 or do a registry hack (I haven't
figured it out yet). Apparently to fix a security problem, this update messes
with shell32.dll which is where all the desktop icons are stored. I haven't
been able to turn up anything about this for windows xp sp2/IE6 users in any
description of the download, security descriptions, technet forums etc. Hope
they let us know soon what we should do other than uninstalling the update.

If you installed KB943460 then that is why you no longer can add the IE icon
to the desktop..

There is no fix of any value yet other than putting a crappy shortcut to the
ie launching file...

Just go to add/remove programs and kill the update with KB943460 and you
once again will have the option to add IE icon to your desktop.

Wrong.

Yes, 943460 removes that Customize Desktop option in WinXP and Win2K03
machines *running IE7* (only). MS hasn't told us why this change was made.

The Resolution in http://support.microsoft.com/kb/555849 will place the IE
icon on the desktop but it will NOT bring the Customize Desktop option back.

well I didn't bother with the microsoft fix...

I simply went to add/remove programs, chose the check box to shoe updates
and then uninstalled the KB943460 update, rebooted and I now once again can
customize my desktop and add IE back like I did before...

perhaps the ms fix screws with something and prevents you from getting it
back...

Like I said.. I uninstalled that single update, rebooted and my system is
back to normal.. nothing more nothing less was done

Suit yourself. If you'd rather have that Customize Desktop option available
and remain vulnerable to an attacker who will be able execute arbitrary code
on your machine (translation: hijack it), so be it.

Or you simply could have uninstalled IE7.

If you have TweakUI, there is a setting in the Desktop section that will
put the icon back for you (even if you have the KB943460 patch in).

There is an article at http://support.microsoft.com/kb/555849 that
speaks to this. I tried the instructions there for the registry fix,
and it did not work. I am using the Classic theme and start menu - I
found that if I did the same fix, but in the key just above named
ClassicStartMenu instead of the key named NewStartPanel, it worked.

Yes, editing the Registry per 555840 will give you the IE7 desktop icon but
it does not give you back the Customize Desktop option.

So, how often does one need to change this option, anyway?
