This morning when I booted up my computer, I received a message similar to
this:
General Protection Error. You Must ReStart Computer. System Halted.

I've fought this problem all day. It will start in safe mode but most of
the time from there, I can get on the Internet. I've tried System Restore
but it did not help.

Any suggestions????

thanks.

Do you recall what you did before this happened, i.e. installing any new
software or hardware? Any changes you made? That is important to know.

Re: General Protection Error at start up

Last night, I updated Shockwave. I used the computer for a while and then
shut it down. Then, this morning, I started getting the error. So I did a
System Restore that was a few days old. The System Restore did not help so I
reversed the Restore Operation. The subsequent restart did O.K. and that's
why I'm able to be on the Internet right now. I'm afraid that when I shut
down for the night, I'll be back to square one.

Thanks.

Re: General Protection Error at start up

Is this what happens when software for one version of windows
is installed on another version of windows?

It shouldn't but remotely could, only if it did, SR would have taken care of
it, IMHO.
The one in the know about this subject isn't around anymore, sad to say.
Wonder if he stops by every once in a while, without saying anything.
I am speaking of Shane, of course.
Unless someone else here has some specific knowledge about this, hopefully.
