Terminal Server Licensing issue

We have Terminal Servers running Windows Server 2003. The server was setup as
the Terminal Server licensing server (Server 1). Within the Terminal Server X
licensing window it lists three (3) entries:
1) Existing Windows 2000 Server - Terminal Services CAL Token (per device)
Type: Built-in
Total: Unlimited
Available: Unlimited
Issued: 0
2) Temporary Licenses for windows server 2003 - Terminal server per device
taken
Type: Temporary
Total: -
Available: -
Issued: 2
3) Windows Server 2003 - Terminal Server Per User CAL Token
Type: Open
Total: 20
Available: 20
Issued: Not Applicable

And I double checked Terminal Services configuration\server settings:
Licensing: Per user
License server discovery mode: Automatic
I'm really unsure if this is configured correctly, why Terminal server per
user is not applicable and any help would be appreciated.

Windows Server 2003 License Server does not have support for tracking of Per
User License, hence you see "Not Applicable"
In Windows Server 2008 License Server there will be support for tracking and
monitoring the Per User Licenses.

MS never implemented tracking of "Per User" licenses. One of the
mysteries of the universe. If I want to pirate licenses, I just had to
buy 5 TSCALS and tell 2003 that I had 150 of them...

Word is that 2008 will track them...

Thanks.

I'm a little worry about is what's will happen and can I still use TS after
120 days, because MS server 2003 still issue me temporary licenses and it
will expired after 120 days.

Are you sure that when you connect with a *new* client, which has
never connected before, that you are still issued a temporary Per
Device TS CAL? If so, you are correct to worry, because then
something is wrong.
But maybe the temporary licenses that you see have been issued
before you installed the Per user licenses or switched the TS to
the Per user licnesing mode?

Hi Vera,
You are right, I double checked and I found the temporary licenses have been
issued before I changed Group Policy to Per user licenses. Thanks, I really

OK, good to hear that everthing is as it should!
Those temporary licenses will eventually disappear from the License
manager, 30 days after they have expired.
