Hello,

I have a problem with access to SAN drives after applying SP2 to Windows
2003 Enterprise. The HBA is an Emulex LP982 with a storport driver. After
applying SP2 the server lost access to 3 out of the 4 disk drives assigned to
it. Further tests revealed that LUNs translated to 7 or lower are still
accessible, and only 8 and higher are no longer accessible. I am prettry sure
the problem lies with the storport.sys Microsoft driver, as I tried to copy
the older version (I know - not a good practice - only for troubleshooting
purposes) of the file over the SP2 (and hotfix - see below) version and
everything was back to normal.
Moreover, I found there was a very recent hotfix (31 Oct) that described a
problem that sounds similar - and I got and installed it, but still no
improvment.
The hotfix description is at http://support.microsoft.com/kb/943545/en-us.

Thank you in advance,

Jonathan Eshel

Thank you Wolf (I hope I can call you Wolf ...). However, the hot-fix I
applied replaces exactly the files as the one you indicate (diskdump.sys and
storport.sys) with a later version in terms of file dates and file versions,
so I think it supersedes the one you mention.

Jonathan,

Yes, sadly I saw that the update you have put does have newer sys
files than the KB i posted up. I was just posting that article there
in case you happened to miss the information as it referenced the
Emulex.

Just out of curiosity, is the firmware up to date on the 928
controller? 1.92a1 is current as of March 29th, 2007. I checked the
readme.txt but didn't see any specific mention of your issue as the
firmware came out just shortly after SP2 was released.

Yes - the firmware is up-to-date.

Crap, that's a bummer then. Well, here's hoping the MS boys and girls
get you sorted out with an updated storport driver soon. I remember
being told about a page on the MS web site where you can report that a
problem from a hotfix or KB article is still not helping but I'll be
damned if I can recall where it was posted. I'd say to ask around if
anyone in the group knows where this page is an fire off a request to
MS that the storport driver is still not acting right.

Re: storport.sys problem after SP2

Jonathan,

There seems to be a slightly newer storport.sys driver available at
the following KB article. Have you tried this one by chance? Any luck
from Microsoft regarding your issue?

storport.sys problem after SP2

I am having a issue where a windows 2003 server with SP2 hangs shutting down and starting up when the fiber cables are connected to the HBA's. The HBA's are EMULEX LP9002.

I have upgraded all the EMULEX drivers and firmware as well as applied the MS hot fix KB943545 and am still having this issue.

Thank you for any help you can provide.

Hello Tim,

I work for Emulex in the Technical Support department.

Without a few more details, it is difficult to know what may have happened.

One caution, you must have the KB articles listed on the Emulex web site
installed before you install/update the driver especially with SP2.

I recommend that you contact us for support. Support is free and available
24x7.

You can contact us at:

US/Canada: 800-854-7112
International: +1-714-885-3402
email: tech.support@emulex.com

We look forward to assisting you.
