Profiles Documents and Settings

Hi,
I would like to clarify what profile info gets stored where. I have a win2k3
Server running TS approx 50 different users connect to it and run one App on
the TS (configured to run when they connect) there are no other profile
settings configured either in Group Policy or on the user profile settings.
When the user connect via TS each user gets a (presumably) TS profile crated
in C:\doc&Sett they are not particularly large but each but obviously this
takes up space so now the dir contains data approx 2.5GB or so. I have read
various bits of info about changing the location to a different drive and
redirecting my docs etc. I configured one partcular user to use a TS profile
path on a different drive and sure enough when they logged in a profile
appeared on the new drive but it also reappeared on the original C: drive
which I would rrather not happen Am I missing something here or will this
occur irrespective of how I configure the TS Profile path, I would have
thought in this case the redirection of my docs etc would be of little value
as the users run one app on the TS and then disconnect when they are finished
so do not us anything else whilst running under TS.
Can someone explain or shed any light or make suggestions on the way forward?

When you use a TS profile redirected (=roaming) to another drive, the profile
will be loaded on the server on which the user logs on. During log on the
profile is copied to the TS. When the user logs off, the profile is copied
back to the redirected location. When you use a GPO for redirection of my
documents, startmenu, etc , these settings are NOT copied to the TS with log
on. They stay on the redirected location. More info on how to set this up can

Hi Bart,

Thanks for responding I only have one server win2k3 which is also running TS
therefor I cant create a new OU just for that function.
What I dont understand complately is why when I change the User properties
TS Profile Path to a different drive and the profile gets created in the new
location but why it also recreates the profile in C:\docs&Settings?

That's how profile handling is designed.
Everything would be terribly slow if you didn't have a local copy
of the profile.
But you can configure the server to delete these local copies of
the profiles automatically when users log off. That's easiest done
in a Group Policy.

Thanks for the response,
which of the locations will get deleted the one on the C: drive or where I
configure the TS profile location, I am not bothered about the TS profile
location but I am concerened with the C drive location.

The name of the setting is
"Delete cached copies of roaming profiles"

and the cached copy is the one in C:\Documents and Settings, so
that's the one you want to get rid of.

I would have thought that setting related to the normal profiles rather than
the TS profiles but I will give it a go

The settings applies to *any* roaming profile.
You decide which profiles by linking the GPO to the correct OU, in
this case to the OU which contains the Terminal Server computer
account.
If you link a GPO with this setting to the OU which contains the
client computer accounts, then the locally cached copy of the
normal (=workstation) profile will be deleted from the clients.
