Howdy,

I just reinstalled Win 2000 Pro on one of our systems.

Nearly all of its software is loaded, and working properly.

A few minutes ago, I needed to locate a particular file on
the system, and so, clicked Start | Search.

In the appropriate field, I entered *.PST and launched the
search.

To my surprise, perhaps three seconds later, I saw "Search
Completed, no files found" (or some such wording.)

It seemed that the search ran with remarkable speed, and I
know with certainty that the system had a PST file because
it was running Outlook 2000.

I assumed that I had entered the search criterion with a
typo, and so, tried again, with greater care.

The search proceeded just as it had before, again finding
nothing, and doing it very quickly.

Next, I went to another system on our LAN, and repeated the
search. It took about 45 seconds, (with the searched files
streaming by) to locate the PST file I was looking for.

What might cause the Search function to fail to operate
properly, and more importantly, what can I do to repair it?

Very sincere thanks,

Re: Search function not Searchin'...?

Try Explorer|Tools|Folder Options|View, then radio button for "Show hidden
files and folders"

Hi Dave,

In the drop down (rather than Radio Button) I have
un-checked "Hide System Files & Folders" (or similar
wording), but because I am not at the system right now, will
have to look at that again.

I will follow up on your suggestion tomorrow, and will let
you know.

Sincere thanks,

I had some of that trouble yesterday. I ran a sfc and then I used all of my
scanners - Spyware Detector, AdAware and NoAdware. It is working OK now.

Hi again Dave,

We have lift off... but, I have a related question:

Are there things that can "re-set" that checkbox to the
default (that is, re-hide system files)?

I ask because I am certain that I had set it to show those
files, but as you suggested, indeed, it was set to hide.

Thanks again,

Hi again,

As I have tried to continue my setup of this new
installation of Outlook, I have stumbled into another
problem (and no, this is not a Win 2000 difficulty, but I
thought I'd give it a shot...)

When I try to point Outlook to the old PST, I get a dialog
telling me to enter the password.

I am sure that we did not have the PST password protected
intentionally.

Does outlook assign some sort of default password? Or is
there some other way for me to access the contents of the
old PST? (I will add that I have tried importing, but that,
too, asks for the password.)

Thanks again,

Re: Search function not Searchin'...?

I'm no outlook expert but in the past I've used the File|Import function to
restore my outlook stuff.

Re: Search function not Searchin'...?

Possibly group policy but I wouldn't expect that of a new installation.

Hi again Dave,

I tried to import, but at the last screen, it asks for the
password.

As it turns out, this is no biggie, but it is odd.

In any case, I appreciate your help.

All the best,
