Minor Correction: XP/SP2 , as in here on my machine, includes the
necessities for a SATA drive though it sounds like yours does not. I think
it's more a combo of XP and the SATA controllers on the mother board that
determine whether an external driver is needed. There are also different
typs of SATA drives too I recall.
But as I mentioned before, all I had to do was turn on the computer and
it saw the drive and installed it; no separate drivers needed.
That's why I asked if you knew for sure that you actually needed the
drivers. XP does have SATA drivers but apparently not a one size fits all.

I've heard of issues with getting SATA going as boot disk. As I still have
an IDE ATA for my boot disk I haven't had the experience yet.

Why? Since the ATA is IDE, nothing should have had to be changed for that
drive. Guess you confused me.

Hmm, OK, that goes beyond the limits of my rudimentary experience; sorry.
Here's a link that might help; there were lots of others but mostly forum
hits and such:

The Mfr of your drive may have the details you need, too. As I said before
I just assigned it a drive letter and then went ahead and formatted it, and
was back in business with mine.
Giess that's about the limit of any assistance I can give.
