I managed to find out what this is by killing system processes until the
icon would vanish.

It appears that it is caused by the "Window Image Worker" service
(yes, another svchost.exe!) that comes with Internet Explorer 7.
Stopping and disabling this service fixed the "problem".

Can anybode please tell what this service does? It is astonishing that
Google only comes up with one (not useful) hit... Also the services
control panel has no description for this service.

The fact that it belongs to IE7 explains why I only noticed this recently:
I switched to IE7 just 2 or 3 weeks ago... Meanwhile I have learned to
appreciate FireFox (completely different story).
