Did you uninstall IE6 SP1 prior to reinstalling WinME?

Re: Explorer 6 update

No, I did not uninstall IE6 SP1 prior to reinstallation and I would not know
how to do that unless it is the same as Q891781, the only Internet Explorer
program on my add/remove program list.

Btw, the folder Internet Explorer\uninstall information contains several
items renamed ie5old.

Re: Explorer 6 update

Re: Explorer 6 update

What you have now is a fine mess! An Internet Explorer version 5 and 6
soup mix that is next to imposible to repair without a complete format
and reinstall of Windows ME.

You can try http://www.litepc.com/ieradicator.html to completely remove
IE and then see if you can install IE from scratch again, or reinstall
ME after you IEradicate it.

Re: Explorer 6 update

Too late to worry about that now. (It would have been listed in Add/Remove
Programs /prior/ to the reinstall.)

Please await assistance from one of the WinME experts.

Re: Explorer 6 update

Re: Explorer 6 update

Try this:

Go to My Computer - Tools - Folder Options - View:
- Select "Show hidden files and folders", click Apply - OK

Create a folder named "Old uninstall".

Go to folder C:\Program Files\Internet Explorer\Uninstall Information.

Now Edit - Select All - Cut all files.

Open "Old uninstall" folder and paste the files.

Update IE6 again and you should be able to install all the troublesome
components.

If everything works as expected, you can delete the "Old Uninstall" folder
and the files you moved.

Good luck,

Zee

Re: Explorer 6 update

Re: Explorer 6 update

Thank you -- it worked like a charm.

Note: Someone had suggested a similar procedure in response to another post
regarding the same problem, which did not work for me. I think this one
worked because, while having Windows Update open, I first moved the old IE
info into a separate folder and then attempted the download.

Re: Explorer 6 update

Thank you. I would have followed your suggestion, but I first tried the
method suggested by OOPS below, which seemed to be a little less drastic.
The installation was successful and there was not need for the IEradicator.

Re: Explorer 6 update

A quick note if anyone reads this:

IERadicator will ruin WinME and System Restore.

Usually there are other options available to solve IE problems in WinME.

Re: Explorer 6 update

Re: Explorer 6 update

Yes it will, but the suggestion was not to use it to simply get rid of
IE for good, it was to use it to try to fix the problems caused by
reinstalling ME without first removing IE6. After using it the user
could have reinstalled ME succesfully and then done the updates. Your
suggestion appears to have fixed the problem so there is no need to use
IEradicator.

Or at least rename wmploc.dll to wmploc.old or similar.
