Re: HELP!!!! I've got "per User" I need "per device"

It seems to me that your problem is not that you have the wrong
licenses, the problem is that you have not changed the licensing
mode of your TS to match the licenses you bought.

The behaviour that you see means that your Terminal Server is still
in the default "Per Device" licensing mode. That means that it
doesn't "see" your Per user licenses, and thus runs on temporary
Per Device licenses which are now going to expire.

The remedy is simple: go to Start Menu - Administrative tools -
Terminal Services Configuration. In the Server Settings, change the
licensing mode to Per User.

Note that currently Per User TS CALs are unmanaged.
This means that when a TS server is set to accept User TS CALs it
will look to the license server to make sure that one is available
but it will not be decremented from the database. So the "Issued"
count will also list as "N/A".
It is your responsibility to have a valid User TS CAL for every
user that uses the terminal server.

But if you really want to change the type of license (reason would
be that you have more users than clients, like in a classroom or
multiple shift situation, then you have to call the Clearinghouse
to get your license pack re-issued. Switching is only allowed at
the time that you renew your Software Assurance Agreement.

Re: HELP!!!! I've got "per User" I need "per device"

Thanks Vera,
What you are saying is that unless I have more clients than licenses, don't
worry. I have exactly 5 users but from time to time I need to log in remotely
to do back-ups and the accountant neds to log in to run reports. Do I need
two more licenses or don't I get to use the free admin license? I usually log
in after hours when there are no users present.
Thanks,
Dillion

Re: HELP!!!! I've got "per User" I need "per device"

Yes. In the situation that you describe, Per user licensing is the
cheapest for you, since you are probably logging in from multiple
workstations.
Make sure that you switch the licensing mode on the TS to Per User
licensing, this is a *must* for things to work properly with your
Per User licenses.

As soon as you installed Terminal Services (as opposed to just
enabling Remote Desktop for Administration), you did *not* have
free administrative sessions anymore. So both you and the
accountant need a license. It doesn't matter that you logon after
hours, since TS licensing is not per concurrent usage, it's per
individual user or client.
