My security suite has expired and the issue I have is that new versions I
have seen do not include WME. I suspect some may work but would rather have
input of your experiences. Please respond with which packages you have
working under WME.

Thanks,
Norman

Avast! will work with Win Me:

http://avast.com/eng/system-requirements-avast-home.html

Get the free Home version here:

http://avast.com/eng/download-avast-home.html

What I like about Avast is that it updates automatically and can do a
boot virus scan before Windows loads.

Re: Antivirus, security, etc.

Hello:

In addition to the Avast! Home Edition, the current AVG Free Edition v7.5
also works with Win ME.
See: http://free.grisoft.com/doc/download-free-anti-virus/us/frt/0 .

Also, Zone Alarm states on their web site that ZA states that "Pre-6.5
products will continue to run on the Windows 98/98SE/Me operating system."
And, as far as I can tell, no new functionality was added to the *Free
Edition* versions of ZA after v6.1. The new features all seemed to be added
to the Pro Edition of ZA.

The last build of version 6.1 of ZA Free can be downloaded at:
http://filehippo.com/download_zonealarm_free/?907 . This page states that it
requires Win 2000 or higher, but as I said, ZA itself says that pre-v6.1
will work with Win ME.

HTH,
O.J.

Re: Antivirus, security, etc.

Hello:

Also note that BitDefender Free Edition v10 also runs on Win 98/ME, although
it does *not* have a real-time on-access scanner, just an on-demand scanner.
But it could make a good 2nd anti-virus for doing disk scans as a 2nd
opinion.
See:
http://www.bitdefender.com/PRODUCT-14-en--BitDefender-10-Free-Edition.html .

For spyware, Spybot S&D still runs on Win 9x/ME (
http://www.safer-networking.org/en/index.html ), Ad-Aware Personal 1.06r1 is
still available from FileHippo (
http://filehippo.com/download_ad-aware/?2466 ), SUPERAntiSpyware runs on Win
9x/ME ( http://www.superantispyware.com/supportfaqdisplay.html?faq=6 ).
But please note that these products (at least the free editions) also lack
real-time scanning.

HTH,
O.J.

Re: Antivirus, security, etc.

Thanks for the info. I'm comfortable with AVG and ZA, but must have gotten
confused as to what would work with WME.
Do I need 6.1 or something pre-6.1?

Re: Antivirus, security, etc.

I run SpyBot and AdAware.
I had used AVGfree in the past and sure it had limitations as well.
I used ZA 5.5 and the version that came in CA security suite. Unfortunately
they have dropped WME support and believe they started using Tiny as the
firewall. Probably played with it years ago as well, but like the self
configuration available in ZA. I'll check and see what the free edition
does.

As was mentioned in the post to which you replied:

Re: Antivirus, security, etc.

Hello:

Sorry for the confusion! I wrote pre-v6.1 when I should have written
pre-v6.5.
Zone Alarm Free Edition v6.1, specifically v.6.1.744.1 is the last that ZA
says will work with Win 98/ME.

You can download it at: http://filehippo.com/download_zonealarm_free/?907 ,
even thought File Hippo says that the minimum requirement is Win 2000.

O.J.

I use AVG Free for anti-virus, outpost for the firewall and spybot for
spyware. I've used many different security programs and these are the
three that I feel confident using and don't feel
any need whatsoever to use any others in combination with them. Best
of all they don't cost anything, they are lighweight and simple to
use.

However here is some I found that are basically free after rebate:
