Locked into 16 colours.

Newbie.

Loading Win98se on an old clone.
I cannot get anything but 16 colours.

Gigabyte 7zx 1.00 motherboard
I assume with onboard graphics.

What steps do I need to identify and load
graphics driver?
Manual suggests VT82C686B PSIPC
but lots of other confusing display details
I am totally lost here :(

I see nothing online that suggests in any way that this motherboard had onboard
graphics, so I am not sure why you assume that. Where on the back of the computer
is the video connector for the monitor? If it is up with the USB ports, printer
ports, and mouse/keyboard ports, then it is likely integrated. If it is down below
that in a horizontal slot, then you have a video card.

Download, install, and run EVEREST Free Edition:
http://www.majorgeeks.com/EVEREST_Free_Edition_d4181.html

You can use it to find the true identity of your display adapter.
Expand the Display section in the left-hand pane of Everest, then select Windows
Video and note what is listed there, and what is listed as the Video Adapter
Manufacturer.
Then select PCI / AGP Video and note what is listed for Video Adapter and for 3D
Accelerator.
Next select GPU, and note the video Adapter Name.

Post back with that info.

The Ga-GF2000 GeForce2 AGP video card from Gigabyte is not "suitable for 2000 and XP
only". It is suitable for Win98....in fact this review is based on testing in
win98:

therefore I presume I have a GA GF 2000 display card
suitable for 2000 and XP only.
I am running through your instructions and will post.

After that, I guess I'll need a graphics card support list for Win98se

Wow! 98 is flying..........! Thanks a whole bunch Glen.

IIRC monitor is something like 1026x768 @70mhz ...beautiful :)

Don't know how you arrived at that driver package,
I searched and clicked, got "Bikini desktop" or other crap
and no less than 16 cookies to disable, there were so many
drivers to choose from my eyes glazed over.

Tinkering is becoming fun, cannot wait to load my
5 mill record database and see how that runs.

I also bought a $3 HP scanner ADF, but will not be tinkering with that
I had no idea HP had such a bad reputation.
One site the blogger suggested a defragment would disable
the scanner software.
I threw the scanner in the dumpster.

Just one more query, if I may.
This motherboard has a dual bios, and I can update
the bios, by going on line to Gigabyte (when I bring it in from the garage)

Any comments on that process? is it regarded as safe to do?

"If you do not encounter any system instability or bugs with the current BIOS
version, we suggest that you keep it."

Unless there is some feature or fix in the newer BIOS version that you need, don't
flash.

You need to determine what board you have for sure....there is both a GA-7ZX (Rev.
1.x), and a GA-7ZX-1 (Rev.1.x), as well as other Revisions of both those models.
Also you need to determine what BIOS version you have now. The Gigabyte online
utility may be able to find that for you.
