I have tally 6.3.1 Single User accounting software loaded in my PC with OS
Win98 SE. I also have AVG Free Edition Anti-Virus which is updated daily.
Suddenly when I tried to open Tally I get the following ERROR msg:

While Opening File: C:\Tally631\LOADTALLY.EXE
Virus identified Obfustat.UGX.

I have tried to uninstall and reinstall Tally but everytime I try to open by
double-clicking on the LoadTally icon on the desktop, I get the error msg.

How did this happen and how can I remove it?
Thanking you

If you are absolutely sure it is NOT an issue [virus or otherwise] then
tell AVG to ignore the file. Sorry I don't have AVG installed at the moment
[testing AVAST again] or I would direct you to the proper place to do so.
It may only be a stub [left over] or false positive caused by code which
resembles a known signature, or programs which use virus-like aspects.

I would, however, suggest you check that file on one of the Web-based virus
checking sites.
Just because we have used something for years do not mean it is free from
some virus, Trojan, or other.
I'll use myself as example:
I have run across old programs I had previously tested and used which DID
contain something [generally a Trojan or worm, though occassionally a virus]
which had made it through YEARS of tests by various anti-virus programs
[free and paid, major player or not, and Windows and DOS based]. Suddenly,
some change is made to the definitions, a variant described or other, and
WHAM, the app or file checks bad everywhere. All anti-v providers try to
keep up, but none are absolute, and can occassionally give false positives
with a definition change.

Some time in this NG we discussed a remnant (?) of the CIH virus in
original software that was supplied in CD format with a Compaq
machine.

At that time all but two antivirus programs found no infections.

This was the report on 07.09.2007:
http://www.virustotal.com/resultado.html?61100ce10c1528f3093fd5bf37a3f0e1

Avast - - Win32:CIH-C
CAT-QuickHeal - - Tool.Win32.Reboot (Not a Virus)

This is the latest result:
http://www.virustotal.com/resultado.html?4e8d24affec3e91a7f9599a4f6a5de34

AVG 7.5.0.503 2007.12.02 Win32/Small
CAT-QuickHeal 9.00 2007.12.01 Tool.Win32.Reboot (Not a
Virus)
Ikarus T3.1.1.12 2007.12.02 Trojan.FlashKiller.C

Analysing the "infected" file with a hex editor and comparing it with
the original confirms that it does have additional code. The text
strings associated with the CIH virus are also clearly visible.

Re: Tally

I forgot to inform you about one important issue. The desktop icon is NOT
the usual Tally Icon which is yellow with Tally logo. It is an ordinary
Application (EXE) logo and that is perhaps the reason it is NOT opening! In
other words, the application gets loaded (when it is reinstalled from a CD)
but the Desktop Icon does NOT get loaded correctly. I have checked the CD
and find that there is NO Virus.

Re: Tally

Uhm, okay, relying on your checks for virus and other:

Why not create a shortcut to the tally exe, cut and paste that in \{windows
folder}\Start Menu\{wherever you want it}

This will work, but likely ONLY if you have told AVG to ignore the file...
otherwise AVG will not let the file run [no other anti-v program would
either, kinda defeats the purpose if it thinks its a virus]. Did you try a
recent AVG update to correct the issue, or contact AVG concerning the
potential false positive?

BTW, unless some viruses, Trogans, and Spyware are installed or attempted at
installation, sometimes they are essentially undetectable...

Re: Tally

As suggested, I outlined the problem in the AVG Free Forum and the reply
from the Moderator was to read the article pertaining to this spyware titled
"How to clean an infected computer"!
I did all that was applicable to Win 98SE.

I then tried to reinstall TALLY single user edition from the CD and I am
still having the same problem. The desktop icon is not the usual one but an
ordinary Application logo which does not load!

Could it be because I still have the last TWO years Accounting Files still
in the system?!

Thanking you
