I have win98
Internet Explorer 6.0
Macromedia\FlashPlayer 9,0,45,0

My problems began about a week ago when the videos at youtube failed to
materialize in my Explorer browser.
All I get now is a white blank box where the video should be.

Through trial and error I was eventually directed to the Adobe website where
supposedly I have FlashPlayer version 9,0,45,0 and I now need version
9.0.47.0.

To my knowledge ,,I now need to download the uninstaller plus the new
version of FlashPlayer.
That's fine and dandy except that the Internet Explorer 6.0 won't allow me
to download the dang things!
Every time I try it prompts me with the following error warning:

Internet Explorer cannot download uninstall_flash_player.exe from download
macromedia.com

Internet Explorer was not able to open this internet site. The requested
site is either unavailable or cannot be found Please try again later

To my surprise,, Microsoft is aware of the situation!
Through trial and error,,, I eventually got to
Error message: "Internet Explorer cannot download a file"
http://support.microsoft.com/kb/816868/en-us?spid=2073&sid=204

816868 is something I currently don't have on my system.

Apparently,, the cure for this is a HOTFIX.
Whatever the heck that is.
I did request a Hotfix,, but to no avail,, it's NOT responding.
I believe the reason is because I don't have one of the listed platforms.

Hotfix replacement information
Date Time Version Size File name
--------------------------------------------------------------
28-Apr-2003 12:15 6.0.2800.1193 586,240 Wininet.dll

I have on my system a Wininet.dll file

wininet.dll
Version 6.00.2800.1548
Dated Friday, April 28, 2006

I have NO idea what that means though!

Through more trial and error,,, and much frustration,,
I finally got to
http://support.microsoft.com/kb/871260/en-us?spid=2073&sid=204
An update rollup is available for Internet Explorer versions 5.x and 6.0

And in that includes
816868 (http://support.microsoft.com/?kbid=816868) Error message: "Internet
Explorer cannot download a file"

Again that's kewl,,IF I COULD DOWNLOAD!!

Is there anybody out there that can help me get my machine downloading again?
The effort will be greatly appreciative.

I've been thru that same hassle with Flash Player. The thing is a
POS. I personally hate Flash player and it got worse when Adobe took
over. I spent days going thru the same hassle as you. I finally
completely removed the old version. Use the uninstaller, then remove
every entry in the registry, and you can finally download and install
the newer ver.

OR, install Firefox or Opera and just install their Flash. I have
both of them and never had any problems installing flash in either of
them. IE is goofy...... By the way, I still run IE5.5 but rarely use
it.

Hope this helps.

Re: Win98, IEv6.0 & FlashPlayer

Well ironically,, (suspiciously?) ,, (characteristically?),,I just returned
from the Adobe site and they just announced
Download the Adobe Flash Player uninstaller:
Windows: uninstall_flash_player.exe (163 KB) (updated 12/3/07)
Note: If you have a Windows Flash Player uninstaller downloaded prior to
December 3, 2007 on your desktop, then please delete it and download the
latest version.

I was still unable to download it.
But it figures,, the last couple of days I have been trying to get to that
site,, I wasn't allowed to do so.

THIS IS CRAZY!

THANK GAWD MY TV DOESN'T OPERATE LIKE THIS!!

LOL
Can you imagine,,every few months,, "you gotta upgrade tuner files to get
Comedy Central"

"Sorry,,your TV wasn't able to access ESPN.com. Their website is not
responding. You need a critical update from SONY TV. Watch Comcast Sports
instead"

"SONY TV was unable to upgrade the FNC module. Please tune to MSNBC and
Keith Olbermann while he rants to you and the other five people watchin'
about Bill O'Reilly, your cheap SONY TV and why it's all Bush's fault"

Re: Win98, IEv6.0 & FlashPlayer

I have satellite TV, and I have those problems (or very similar). I'm
betting that he future also holds promise that pretty much *everyone* will
be getting similar problems in the near future. What with "interactive"
content, etc.

Not to mention the February 2009 changeover to HDTV by all stations.
