system won't go into low power mode

In the last month or so, I've noticed that my computer will no longer go
into low power mode (ie, turn off the monitor and turn off the hard drive).
If I change the power option settings, the system will respond to my
settings thereafter, but if I turn the computer off and reboot, the
computer will again fail to comply with my power option settings.

I haven't changed or added any software, except I have done the weekly AVG
updates. Using the MS Configuration manager, all unnecessary start-up
software has always been bypassed. Anyone have any suggestions?

Thanks,

Jean

Hi Jean
You might go into the AVG Control center, review the results of the
tests if you don't check them all (I don't). I recently put up their
version 7.5. You would look to see if they had a false positive on
something you need. I get false positives with them fairly often - so
far it has been harmless, old stuff - command.com a la 1995. But
yesterday they deleted motherboard_driver_realtek_whql.exe which was
my backup image for an NT4 system that died of psu stroke last year.
We didn't actually replace the psu cause the whole computer smelled
like a stale BBQ. (GriSoft could say they did me a favor to point out
some software I no longer have a use for. But...)

Bob, thanks for your response. I had posted the query some time ago and I
managed to find out the problem since then. I had used Glary Utilities to
clean out garbage from the registry, and I kinda overdid it. (The program
said a slew of entries were not needed; unfortunately, two of the entries
turned out to be for the LoadPowerProfile processe that is in the start up
process. My bad for blindly following the program's suggestion.)
