XP64 won't enable second video adapter.

I have a new m2a-vm board, AMD Phenom cpu, 2GB ram, WinXP64. I have
installed two different pci video cards because I want to use a second
monitor, and the onboard video doesn't support two vga connectors. In
Windows, it sees a Standard VGA Graphics adapter, but it won't enable it,
not even with the generic vga drivers. If I set the primary adaptor to the
pci adaptor, then Windows loads on it and installs the generic vga driver,
but then it doesn't see the onboard video chipset. In either case, I can't
get two monitors plugged in and working at the same time.

Is this a known issue with this board? Or a known problem with XP64, or
both? I'm not quite sure where to go from here.

Update. I installed a nVidia FX5200 into a pci slot. I set it as the primary
display adaptor. Booted to Windows. Installed nvidia driver. Enabled both
displays. It worked for about 2 seconds, then bsod, something mismanaging
sytem ptes (I have discovered that this is a well known but somewhat
uncommon problem with XP64 SP2 and nvidia drivers, and there is no apparent
solution that I'm aware of). All of which leaves me unable to use two
monitors at present.

The nvidia drivers have had a few problems. OTOH, I've been using two
monitors on many different machines running ATI cards for quite a while. On
XP x64, I've run dual monitors on a 9600 (one VGA, one DVI), and on a 1600
I'm now running two monitors as well. Heck, I even did it on my laptop,
running the internal and an external (either VGA or DVI).

Frankly, I would do this with a single card that has the two outputs you
need and disable the onboard. I think you'll have a lot fewer problems. In
theory you should be able to do it with an nvidia, and I'm sure some here
will suggest that. But I _know_ it works with ATI. (Even some recent ATI
drivers have had problems with dual monitors, btw. But the shipping ones in
Windows Vista 64 have had zero problems, and there are definitely ones for
XP x64 that work well.

The FX 5200 is a dual monitor card, but with the onboard video
disabled it still BSODs. I've been using dual monitors for almost 4
years now, and up until now it's always worked great. I have a new
motherboard, and I'm new to XP64, and I'm not sure which is the
culprit. I am, however, willing to use an ATI card, although nVidia
would have been my first choice.

I would try a different revision set of drivers with it. Might be a bad
revision.

Did that - they all do it. Oh, did I mention that it didn't start to
do this until XP64 SP2 came out? My bad, that's a rather important
piece of the puzzle. Apparently, pre-SP2 this worked - the nVidia
driver BSOD, that is. I'm confusing threads, too many topics going on
at once lol.

I dont know your card.
1. If your FX 5xxx is a PCI card, you have to figure out wether PCI Version
corresponds to each (Graphics abd Moboe)
-there are some 5 Volts and 3 Volts "only" specification
-But if u get your FX running at all, it should be fine

2. i have a 690 Moboe (but from Gigabyte)
that one has a BIOS option "Surroundview" (anywhere deep inside)

this is sometimes mentioned as a "ATI catalyst driver specific" adjustment
to run the integrated graphics together with additional ATI / AMD slot cards

-u may check for different setting here "On or Off" ( i would hint for a
"OFF" here )
if u have this option at all

Problem solved:

1) Threw nvidia card in trash, replace with ati 3850.
2) Enabled 4-monitor feature in bios (maybe should have tried that before
ditching nvidia card, but it was an old and slow fx5 series and I wanted to
upgrade anyhow).
4) Now I have 2 video cards up and running, 2 monitors each, and no more
errors :)
