Well not entirely, but after reading this newsgroup for months, seeing
perhaps thousands of posts, wanting to move to Vista BUT checking to see
if M$ made a BETTER or WORSE operating system for my needs, CONCLUDED:
F-O-R-G-E-T V-I-S-T-A!
Even magazine review after review RANKS on Vista for more than one
reason. And OVER AND OVER advise is to stick with XP (which I like for
the most part). And OVER AND OVER people want Vista OFF their PC!!
What to do?
Downloaded Ubuntu 7.1 ISO. Ran fine on my notebook PC (IBM ThinkPad). In
fact I was shocked at how easily everything went! It set itself up, even
had immediate internet access. The package includes networking, email,
file manager, multiple desktops, etc., even a weather widget which is
very nice! Two clicks and you have a radar weather map for any area. You
also have access to a large software repository for downloading other
programs. Amazing!
Tried Linux many years ago but gave up when install kept hanging because
of various SCSI devices on an older PC, but the Ubuntu release is FAR
better. (you've come a l-o-n-g way baby)
Must also say, just to be 'fair', in my opinion ubuntu as nice as it is
(and it is NICE) is still not to the point where a typical PC user will
find satisfaction because I think a higher than average knowledge of
PC's most likely is required to really USE its potential.
Never-the-less, try the FREE bootable CD Ubuntu offers. It will NOT
install itself on your HDD nor fool with ANYTHING to mess up your
existing setup of Windows or whatever. I did that, and decided to
install it! http://www.ubuntu.com/getubuntu/download
BTW: JFTR, I am not a Linux loony. The OS of choice here is, of all
things, Win98SE although I use XP a lot too, W2K4 occasionally. But in
searching for alternative OS's, NOT liking Micro$oft's direction nor
it's worldview, decided to see what the diligent Linux people have been
doing over the years. Found something I like!
WAKE UP Micro$oft, I not about to buy Vista and recommend to friends,
FORGET IT. You'd do MUCH better listening to what potential BUYERS want,
and not pursuing your own foolish ambitious goals!
