I've posted this before but it seems to have gotten lost.

Neither the CD-drive nor the DVD-RW drive are showing in Windows Explorer, &
they don't work. I've recently uninstalled several programs (including
iTunes), but don't know exactly which uninstall caused the problem (if that
is what caused it). Have tried all the usual troubleshooting,
uninstall/reinstall, etc.
I see several posts for a solution to this problem for Windows XP, but
can't find one for Window 2000 Professional.
What do I need to do? If it involves using Regedit, please direct me to
proper steps for backing up, restoring, etc.

Many thanks.

Re: Windows 2000: missing CD/DVD drive

DVD is not natively supported in Windows 2000 so get in touch with the
software vendor on that one.

Re: Windows 2000: missing CD/DVD drive

Hello Turkk,

Can you see it installed in the device maanger? If not search for new hardware
with the add/remove hardware wizard.

Re: Windows 2000: missing CD/DVD drive

Sorry: left out some information second time I posted this.

There are two drives, one just CDs, and a DVD-R/W that I use with Roxio
(always worked just fine). They've both disappeared from Windows Explorer,
but they do both show up in device manager, but with exclamation points &
"error code 31", saying that Windows cannot load the drivers needed. I've
attempted to update drivers from Windows Update, but they say I have the
latest version. Seems the drivers are there, but Windows can't get to them
for some reason.

As I said, I've seen posts pointing to a solution for the problem in XP,
involving altering some registry values (which I'm a little nervous about),
but nothing for Windows 2000.

Many thanks!
