It's incredible really how gullible some people can be. Someone,
somewhere, posted something about being able to get Vista SP1.

And you have no idea how many posts I've read in the past hour of just
how many people have downloaded this "SP1", and are experiencing
problems! And every one of those posts said they downloaded "SP1" from
abc or xyz.

The solution? DON'T download these phoney copies of SP1. They do not
come from Microsoft, and should thus be considered suspect. Microsoft
hasn't even officially release the Vista SP1 RC (Release Candidate) to
public review yet (due this week)!

Unless the download is directly from Microsoft or an unpatched Windows
Update, then you are setting yourself up for trouble, because you could
be downloading a BETA of SP1, or something that could open your Vista
computer to more problems than you'll be solving.

If a website provides a link that takes you to Microsoft, which in turn
provides the actual download, then ok, it could be considered safe, but
that won't happen for a while, because the real Vista SP1 is only going
to be released for download in the first quarter of 2008.

Vista SP1 isn't available for public release yet, so if you download it, it
is a pirated copy; you install it at your own risk.

No, you didn't. You may have gotten other updates but you didn't get
Service Pack 1 for Vista. It hasn't been released yet.

It's an Office Compatibility SP1
I'm downloading it right now...

Re: Windows Vista SP1

Unfortunately, he did. The WU script that enables the RC of SP1 to be
downloaded has been leaked and posted by persons unknown.

I find it most disappointing that these leaks occur.

Re: Windows Vista SP1

Then you got the script necessary from an unauthorized source.
Or you are authorized but neglected to mention that fact.

In any event, be cautious installing Beta.
You should install Beta if you are prepared for complete data loss and
are prepared to perform a Clean install of Windows to resolve any and
all issues.
If you are not prepared for those, you are not prepared for beta.
While that is a rare case, it is possible and part of the nature of
beta testing.
This applies to beta anything from any source, not just Microsoft
products.

Re: Windows Vista SP1

Vista SP1 RC1 has been released via Updates (after downloading a small file
telling Updates to check for SP1 RC1) or by direct downloading the whole
package.

Re: Windows Vista SP1

I know that the DOJ caved and took Google's side after they ranted like
5 year olds:cry:, and Microsoft was forced to make the Search component
a user-replaceable option so that people can install the inferior Google
Desktop Search, but I've just installed Vista RC1, and the "Search" link
in the right-hand pane of the start menu is gone.

And I want it back.

I can still access Windows Search by using the <WINKEY>+<F> keyboard
shortcut, but I'd like to put the "Search" icon back where it belongs,
on the right-hand side of the start menu, under the entries for
"Documents", "Pictures", "Music" and "Games".

And while I'm at it, is there a way of adding "Videos" to that list
too?

Re: Windows Vista SP1

Doesn't entering the item in the "Start Search" just above the "Start
Button" do the same thing?

If you right-click on the Start Button, choose properties, then Customize,
do you see the option to put a check in Search which will bring it back.

I haven't installed SP1 so I don't know.

I too wish that I could add Videos to the list but don't know how. I'll bet
there is some sort of registry hack that would accomplish that.

Re: Windows Vista SP1

Yeah, I could search using the start menu integrated search box, but I
just prefer the way results are presented when using the Search
Explorer.

The only options available when customizing the Start Menu are HOW
search works, and WHAT is searched, but nothing for adding/removing the
"Search" link.
