Hi, I have BSOD on my old server and need to move server 2003 r2 x64 and
exchange server 2007 installation (and preferably keep old doamin names etc)
to new hardware. I can take down the old server easily enoughDoes any one
have an easy step-by-step giude to do this (no one will miss the server)
Thanks Mat

Yes. Use www.sbsmigration.com as a resource. Even though you're not doing an
SBS migration, the core issues are the same. If ALL you need to do is move
your AD to a new machine, that's easy. But to end up with everything looking
the same to your end users? that's a lot trickier. Jeff has done an
excellent and detailed job of covering all the issues.

Hi Thanks for that, a useful resource.
I've decided to add new server as a member server, and just remove exchange
for the old one, promote the new server to GC and just demote the old server,
then install exchange on the new one. (I hope it's as easy as that!)
Regards

Re: Move server 2003r2 and exch 2007 to new hardware - urgent-

Well, let's see. Your exchange will be all new, so no one's mailboxes will
work right. You can use exmerge, but it's a lousy solution, and one that
doesn't deal with public folders at all. Don't forget to move the FSMO roles
to the new server. And there are some real gotchas with SP1 and later of
Server 2k3. You need to COMPLETELY DISABLE THE WINDOWS FIREWALL SERVICE on
both machines before you do anything. Otherwise, it will never fully
promote. It says it is, but it lies. Shares and desktop shortcuts for your
users will be all horked, so you'll need to touch every machine and re-point
to the new server. And recreate all your printers, same issue of touching
every client.

You begin to see why I suggest a Swing Migration? <G> BTDT. Worth every
penny, and it isn't even all that many pennies.
