This happened to a couple people in my office (including me) after the
last set of Vista updates came out in mid December 2007. We followed
these steps to get around it, but Word is still having problems, as
everytime you try to close out the program an error message appears
that "Microsoft Word has stopped Working" and it tries to restart it.
Disabling add-ins will allow you to select text, use your mouse, etc.,
but the error message still appears on closing. We disabled add-ins
by clicking on the office button, choosing word options, then checking
"Show Developer Tab in Ribbon" checkbox. This displays the developer
tab. Then we clicked on the developer tab and clicked on "Macro
Security" - the button looks like a yellow caution sign. This opened
up another window where we were able to choose the add-ins option and
disable all add-ins.
Not sure what the real issue is as the only add-in I had was Adobe
Professional. My coworker didn't have any add-ins on her computer and
it still did the same thing. Hope it's resolved soon.
