My daughter has a computer that runs Windows 98SE. We started it the other
day and all we got on the monitor was a box right in the center that says
"Out of Range" V: (numbers) and H: (numbers) and then it asks if the PC
perameters are correct.

I think it is trying to tell me that it is done for but any suggestions. I
can't get by this screen at all to even get into the hard drive for info. If
I press the Escape key it puts the monitor in the standby mode but the tower
still does its thing.

Re: Help !!!!!

Video card settings have become corrupted
answer NO to the question instead of escaping out and reset the video mode
to something your monitor can support, 800*600 1024*762 until boot is
complete and then adjust for best view

Thanks for responding. I would answer no but it won't even let me do that.
I had tried pressing "Y" for yes and "N" for no -- also tried typing out the
word -- but still nothing.

Re: Help !!!!!

Then boot onto safe mode, tap F5 during start up and windows should load
with a vga 640*480 resolution and you can alter the settings from there.

Least, I think its F5, might be F8, keyboard has 16 Fkeys and I forget which
ones I reprogrammed to be different

Start the computer, tap the F8 key repeatedly until the startup menu
appears and select "Command Prompt Only". Then type
"scanreg /restore" and restore a registry backup that predates the
problem.

It is F5 to get directly to Safe Mode. Or, hold CTRL (or continually tap
F8) during boot to get to the Windows Startup Menu, which hopefully will
be able to display.

If none of that will work, perhaps try a Startup Diskette, & do the
Registry restore Myers suggested.

Get a Startup Diskette from
http://www.bootdisk.com/
, if you don't already have one from "Control Panel, Add/Remove
Programs, Startup Disk tab". At the A:\Prompt, enter...

SCANREG /Restore

It will offer five, one for each of the last five separate days you
booted successfully. Start with the one of the day the problem began, as
these backups of the entire Registry (& System.ini & Win.ini) are done
at boot, not at shut down.

It may be wise to make a copy of the Registry backups first, because I
do believe each /Restore will wipe out the oldest backup. SO, first...

MD C:\RegBckUp
COPY C:\Windows\SysBckUp\RB???.cab C:\RegBckUp

That should copy the 5 Registry backups & perhaps an RBBAD.cab to the
new folder RegBckUp. Here is what it looks like...

C:\>COPY C:\Windows\SysBckUp\RB???.cab C:\RegBckUp
C:\Windows\SysBckUp\rbbad.cab
C:\Windows\SysBckUp\rb005.cab
C:\Windows\SysBckUp\rb004.cab
C:\Windows\SysBckUp\rb003.cab
C:\Windows\SysBckUp\rb000.cab
C:\Windows\SysBckUp\rb001.cab

Probably the first thing to do is to ensure all the wires between the
computer & monitor are plugged in correctly. Un/re-plug them. After
that, try the other suggestions in this thread.
