I have the same problem many other XP users are having related to downloading
a SP2 update. I've tried all of the suggested solutions on the
troubleshooting website and I am having the same results. The following is
the log of the last attempt:

Re: Code 0x80072EE7

Hi BiG aL, I remembered reading something about ZoneLabs and WU awhile back - from my
notes

Posted by another user:
For ZoneAlarm, go into the privacy tab and add update.microsoft.com under the site list
tab and enable mobile codes for only this one.
This will allow Active X to be run, which is required for Windows Update to run
successfully.

Posted by SueH
I fixed it!! Nothing suggested seemed to work. I kept at it and figured it out finally! I
use ZoneAlarm Security Suite 2006 for anti-virus/anti-spyware protection. I opened the
application main menu and clicked 'Privacy' on left menu. On the upper right there are 3
Tabs named Main, Site List & Cache Cleaner. Click on Main tab and go down to 3rd option at
bottom of window called Mobile Code Control. Click 'Custom' button. In 'Custom Privacy
Settings' window click tab called 'Mobile Code'. Click button named 'Reset to Default'.
Click 'Apply' then 'OK'. That should do it. The ActiveX embedded objects had been blocked
causing Windows Update to be blocked as a result. Hope this helps anyone who needs it. If
using other security software check the settings to be sure this isn't what is preventing
updates from running.
Good luck!!

Personally I'm not familiar with ZoneLabs or the versions, but something here may be
similar in your situation/version which could be blocking WU.
Just a thought. Worth a quick check.

Re: Code 0x80072EE7

TaurArian:

I must have had an older version of ZoneLabs that the original poster had
and I did not have the same menus and prompts. I became so frustrated that I
ultimately uninstalled my firewall/ant-virus program and even that didn't
help. After trying numerous other fixes that were on some of the microsoft
troubleshooting pages I eventually tried the malware fix that was posted by
another user named MichGal. It worked for me. The SP2 download worked fine
and I'm up and running. I realize that this may not work for everyone and I
appreciate you and the rest of your staff's help in getting me up and running.

Oh, and I've purchased a new Norton A/V program that I'll be installing here
in a second.

Cheers!

Re: Code 0x80072EE7

Your replacing one problematic software with another.
The system will have similar issues PLUS issues with BITS.

I wish I'd seen your post earlier, BiG aL
[just realized that one really needs to put a space in your pseudonym
.... BiGaL ain't the same, is it ? <w>]

Re: Code 0x80072EE7

Hi,

I am sitting here in front of a computer receiving the same error code when
trying to use the windows update site, after the page for checking active-x
control is displayed.
Here are the last lines of the windowsupdate.log corresponding to the error:

Computer is running Windows XP with Service Pack 2 installed and is using
Kaspersky Internet Security (7.0.0.125).
As far as I unterstand, the corresponding cab file can not be downloaded. I
am a little bit confused, because the URL of the cab file seems to target to
v7 of windowsupdate site, but I am accessing v6 of windows update (i.e. thats
the address shown in my browser).

Kind regards,

Michael

Re: Code 0x80072EE7

The issue stems from Kaspersky's configuration.

> Microsoft.Update.AgentInfo failed: error 0x80040111

In essence, KAV is not allowing the ActiveX object to 'talk' with the
update server. Then the update server attempts to download
wsus3setup.cab and wuredir.cab
The update server confirms that validity of the necessary .cab files
present on the system but then can not determine if they should be
updated due to another communication breakdown.

0x80072ee7 means the server name could not be resolved.
Basically, you would see a 404 error if using a browser and the issue
occurred. But, in this situation, it means that your system can not
locate the update server due to the previously mentioned communication
breakdown.

Suggest you contact Kaspersky or visit their forums to see how this
issue can be resolved.

RE: Code 0x80072EE7

This error is most likely caused by one of the following conditions:

1. Some third party programs affect the Windows Update service.
2. DNS was improperly configured.
3. The Windows Update Temporary folder is corrupted.

Let us refer to following steps to troubleshoot the issue.

Some third party programs can affect the Windows Update service. If you are
running any third party applications such as Spyblocker, Internet or web
accelerators (programs designed to boost the speed of the Internet
connection), security or anti-virus programs (Norton, McAfee, etc.), I
recommend we temporarily disable or shut them down and then try accessing the
Windows Update site later. Please be sure to enable them again after
completing the update process.

Step 1: Configure the connection to obtain an IP address automatically
=====================================================
1. Click "Start", click "Run", input "NCPA.CPL" (without quotations) and
press "Enter".
2. Right-click the network connection and click "Properties".
3. Click to highlight "Internet Protocol (TCP/IP)" and click "Properties".
4. Check "Obtain an IP address automatically" and "Obtain DNS server address
automatically".
5. Click "OK".

Step 2: Rename the SoftwareDistribution folder
====================================
1. Click Start, click Run, and type "cmd" (without the quotes) and press
Enter. Please run the following command in the opened window to stop the
Automatic Updates service.

Type in "net stop WuAuServ" (without the quotes) and press Enter.

Note: Please look at the cmd window and make sure it says that it was
successfully stopped before we try to rename the folder. However, if it
failed, please let me know before performing any further steps and include
any error messages you may have received when it failed.

2. Click Start, click Run, and type in "%windir%" (without the quotes) and
press Enter.
3. In the opened folder, look for the folder named "SoftwareDistribution".
4. Right-click on the folder, select Rename and type "SDold" (without the
quotes) to rename this folder.
5. Click Start, click Run, and type "cmd" (without the quotes) and press
Enter.

Type the command "net start WuAuServ" (without the quotes) in the opened
window to restart the Automatic Updates service.

Note: Please look at the cmd window and make sure it says that it was
successfully started. However, if it failed, please let me know before
performing any further steps and include any error messages you may have
received when it failed.

Best Regards,

Calven
