Windows Vista Media centre stops ripping at 6 songs approx

[Tosh]

Vista premium. Toshiba laptop. Just the past month or two well I"m trying to
rip cd's it seems to rip the first 6 or 7 songs then the cd player starts
making all this clicking and clacking noise and stops ripping. It also
happens when I"m just trying to listen to cd's, but it seems to play complete
DVD movies (so far anyway)

The Toshiba tech says to use my System Recovery disc's I made when I got the
lap. I'm unsure if using this System Recovery will loose all my music and
image files, plus antivirus, and wireless information. The lap is only 3 1/2
months old

Toshiba says if its the cd player itself, its covered, but if its the
software then its my problem and if I bring it in there will be a big charge
to fix it. So much for warantee,lol.

Could I do a system restore, and take it back as far as possible or is that
a useless idea. I'm not a big computer guy so go easy on the instructions, lol

It sounds like a hardware fault.
Support want you to reset the machine back to factory settings to see if it
fixes the problem.
This will, probably, lose your data so don't do it until you have a tested
working backup set, which you already have anyway, right?
Then when the fault is still there they will repair the hardware.

Hi,

Using the restore disks sets the system back to factory state. Generally
this means the loss of any data, settings, and software currently on the
system. The tech wants you to do this to determine if the problem is the
drive itself or something installed after market. Backup your music and
image files by copying them to CD/DVD or thumbddrive before doing this.

From the sounds of it, it's a hardware issue. I would simply replace the
drive to confirm it.

I just wondered why the same drive that will not play a compete cd WILL play
a DVD movie, no problems. Wouldn't you think it would have problems there
too, or am I way off.

Hi,

Actually, that's not uncommon. There are actually two different lasers
involved and apparently, while the one for DVD's works fine, the one for
CD's does not.
