I've Googled and done some looking on the net, but have not really found a
definitive answer.

I've downloaded and installed VLC on both my PC and MacBook. The Apple
version runs with no problem.

With Win 98 SE it appears to d/l & install ok. However I keep receiving
this error message, with AVI and WMV clips.

Error loading DLL 'unicows.dll'l, program will now terminate.

Can anyone point me to the right source material to correct this?

Thank you.....

Check VLC support for any issues with their product:

Windows 95/98/Me users: Please note that these versions of Windows are not
officially supported. No VideoLAN developer uses any of these systems, which makes
them hard to support. VLC should mostly work with them, but some incompatibilities
might appear. You might need to download The Microsoft Layer for Unicode on Windows
95/98/Me Systems*. The two MSLU files need to be put in the C:\Windows\System\
folder.

unicows.dll is a driver, it is either available from the VLC
site or just on the net somewhere, Google.

I installed VLC so long ago I can't remember where I got it, but
I got it - EASILY - because I got the same error message as you.

Just put it in the root directory of VLC and it'll work then.

If you can't find it I'll post it for you somewhere. Lemme know.

Downloaded and have partial sucess. It plays WMVs for 1 or 2 seconds and
then freezes the picture as a jpg type, even tho the play bar continues
to move as tho the video was playing normally. AVIs, the first frame
comes on and freezes as a jpeg. This is more than I had before. Will try
the forum. Have not been there yet. Hope it's active.
Thanks, will keep plugging.

Do the .wmv and .avi files play correctly in Windows Media Player or in any other
compatible media players you have?

Not on Windows. On the MacBook, no problem with any players so far. I'd
download the player again, but, I've already done that. I've always had
at least some problem with players on Windows. I suspect I've messed up
installing the codec,or, there's some setting I've overlooked.

Of course, the Mac is less than 2 months old. I haven't had time to tinker
with it yet! <G>

Thanks again...

Well, it depends on what you mean by "installing the codec", but if you have
problems playing .wmv and .avi files in WMP *and* in other players in Windows, you
may have installed a flakey codec package that has messed up you multimedia
capabilities all around. Your display driver could need updating also, or DirectX.
You could even have a faulty video card.

Have a look at the suggestions here and see if anything helps you:
