Unless the computer is older than Athlon / Pentium4, I would probably
add XP in a dual boot environment. If your C: hard drive (or C:
partition) is getting old (more than 3 years old, smaller than 20 GB)
get a recent model "PATA" / ATA drive with the "box software." Get a
"boxed drive" as opposed to a "Bare drive" unless you Partition Magic
7 or equivalent. "Boxed", you may remember, give you the software you
need to copy the system on the old drive to the new one AND Dual Boot.
THEN install XP in a D: partition for dual booting.
Partition Magic (at least version 7) is a tool you can use to set up
dual booting and/or copy partitions, merge partitions also.
PATA drives are just a little bit hard to find now but I was just on
Outpost.com and saw Seagate 320GB Ultra DMA/100 16MB Buffer Retail
Hard Drive - ST30204N1A1A-RK for $110. The warranty on that Seagate
sounds pretty good.
