Hi all...

I have a VPN I must connect to when doing work for a client. I had this VPN
setup on an XP machine, and all worked fine.
I set it up on Vista, and it refuses to connect. When I click connect, it
shows the progress, then comes back and says it was unable to connect, and
offers to diagnose the issue. Diagnosing simply informs me that nothing is
wrong. Hmm...
oO( I think "not working" is something wrong, but what do I know )

Anyway... I dug around in Event Viewer and found this message...

CoID={89607E47-B21F-47F5-B5B2-40097A2E9074}: The user Machine\User dialed a
connection named VPN Name which has terminated. The reason code returned on
termination is 828.

I look around online and find that this message is an "idle timeout"
message. However my idle timeout is set to "never", and the XP machine still
works fine.
Any one any ideas?

Thanks in advance,
Arthur Dent.

Vista Ultimate, 32bit
1.7GHz, 2GB RAM, 120GB HDD

The best way to debug vpn connections is watch the traffic. Some
vpn clients have very extensive diagnostics. See if yours has a debug or
diagnostic window to bring up. (If it doesn't you'll need a sniffer of
some kind like wireshark.) You can look at the debug window and see where
the setup is failing. There are several steps to setting up a vpn. Chances
are that a firewall, packet filter, or some such is blocking one of the 3
protocols/ports used. That appears as a time out because the packets sent
are never acknowledged.

A simple fix might be to disable packet filtering on the Vista side.

Re: Connecting to a VPN

It could be the MS-CHAP v2 issue. This search result may help. Please post
back with the result.
