Forgive my stupidity but in Windows Defender (Vista Business), using
Software Explorer, how do I tell Defender to stop blocking a program I know
is safe to run?

I find it curious that there are many programs listed in Software Explorer
under Classification as "Not Yet Classified" that are allowed to run. The
program I want to allow to run is also classified as Not Yet Classified but
is blocked. How does one determine the different classes of "Yet To Be
Classified"?

Selecting a program in the left pane gives me the description in the right
pane but the Enable button is greyed out. Is this a gpedit.msc setting
(group policies)?

I find Defender very puzzling.

Once you open Software Explorer in Windows Defender you can click on the
"Show for all users" button. This will allow you to disable or enable the
listed programs, except those that you must change using Task Manager.

Have a nice day.

I think you may have to work at excluding it from the scan, as an interim
measure. Tools, Options, scroll down to Advanced options, and fill the box,
by adding the full path and file name to the Tools/Options/ do not scan box,
hit the add button, and Save.

Re: Allow A Startup To Run

Thanks for the idea, CB. However the enable button is still greyed out
meaning I can't allow anything. Amazing there's nothing in Help about this.
I suspect group policy is the cause but hate to wade through it all looking
for that needle in the haystack.

Re: Allow A Startup To Run

Thanks, Engle. I think that way will suffice as a work-around. Sad one has
to work-around this program.

John,

Did you look here to see if you could find a method that would allow
you to enable it?

Re: Allow A Startup To Run

Thanks for the URL, Brink. Unfortunately I still get the same message no
matter what method I try. I think Defender has defeated me. No matter how I
try and tell WD to trust this program, it won't. I will simply disable WD...
a sad piece of software.
