I restarted my computer today and it did a chkdsk on drive G, which has all
my pictures on it. It claims to have repaired the problems but now I can't
view most of my pics. There were not any problems I saw before this. I was
looking at pics earlier and they were all viewable. All the file names are
there and properties are there I just can't open them with any viewer at all,
most say unknown file header. Question is, how can I undo this, most recent
pics have no backup copy!

Here is copy of log in event viewer if it will help. I cant find any chkdsk
log file.

Description:
Checking file system on G:
The type of the file system is NTFS.
Volume label is Pic Backup.

One of your disks needs to be checked for consistency. You
may cancel the disk check, but it is strongly recommended
that you continue.
Windows will now check the disk.

No backup??? sheesh

Anyway...if they were .jpg files there is at least some hope.

You may have to enable viewing of hidden files...
then search for .chk files (probably in the root directory)

If there are...they are probably the clusters holding the stripped
headers...
and with a hex editor they could be spliced back into your corrupted jpg's

You may need to get some help for that though

Re: CHKDSK Ran on restart now I can't view files!

I can't find any .chk files. Isn't chkdsk supposed to keep a log file or a
chk file? If so how do I turn that back on? Like I said I have back up of
some pics but not all! any more ideas on how to fix this?

Re: CHKDSK Ran on restart now I can't view files!

Chkdsk is a non-reversible utility. Once it makes changes you won't
be able to undo those. The more you use the drive or modify data
lessens the possibility of fixing the issues. It's unfortunate, but a lesson
everyone learns sooner or later - backups are invaluable. About the
only recourse you have now is a professional data recovery service
and it is not cheap.

Re: CHKDSK Ran on restart now I can't view files!

I havent used or modified the drive (maybe windows has) I read that if I
modify the contents the worst it will be to recover! I also read another scan
or a defrag or combination of both could help! Any thoughts on this??

It's a real long shot...
but with a hex editor one might be able to graft-in a header from a good jpg
It's not an easy procedure however...

Finally:

For the time being...do nothing...
try to read the files again in a few days...

I once did a data restoration for a professional photographer who had a HD
that was starting to fail...
though I was able to retrieve about 98% of his files...
about 15% of them were corrupted and non-readable.

The odd thing was that a few days later...most of them became readable.

I have no idea what happened...but it might have been due to NTFS having
some self-healing ability...
there could have been data in the MFT that was restored ???

Re: CHKDSK Ran on restart now I can't view files!

Personally, the more you do to it introduces more variables. What I
do for customers with these type of issues is take a full Image of the
drive and work from the copy. Avoids the "Digging yourself into the
hole deeper" situation that is almost guaranteed to happen. What you
decide to do depends on how important those pictures are to you.

NO.
do not defrag or run chkdsk.
if there is any recoverable data on the drive...
the more you do...the less chance of recovering it!!!!

Re: CHKDSK Ran on restart now I can't view files!

Right click and hold and image then drag and drop in to the same folder -
choose copy here from the right click menu-then try opening the copy of
image file.
