When I was adding a shortcut to my desktop for an Excel document I accidently
dragged the original file out and now I can not access the file at all. I
get the following error message. “Excel cannot access “Bill Info.xls”.
Document may be read-only or encrypted. When you click on OK it displays -
Cannot access “Bill Info.xls” again. I’ve tried taking with tech support
from Dell, but they could not help me. Can someone tell me how to undo this
problem or how to access the file?

Re: Desktop Shortcut

I don't know why you are posting this question here because this is a
newsgroup dedicated to 64 bit Windows issues. Anyway, I have some thoughts:

1. First of all I would restore your corrupt file from the backup that you
made. You did backup your file, didn't you?

2. If for some reason step 1 is not successful, you could try using a
program that will repair a corrupt xls file. I searched on CNET downloads
and found several that are free to try. Here is a link to that site:
http://www.download.com/3120-20_4-0...atingSystems=128&licenseType=50&fileSize=&ca=

3. Another thing you might try is doing a Windows "System Restore" to some
previous date when that file was known to be OK. You will need to have
Windows XP or Vista to be able to do this. Also, System Restore normally
restores the workings of the operating system, not files, so this may or may
not work in your case.

Re: Desktop Shortcut

While not applicable to this newsgroup, the way I have to open a number of
Excel files is to open Excel on the programs menu, use the Office button and
chose open, browse to the file you want, where the original shortcut pointed
to, and open it. If you have accidentally deleted the file, hopefully you
have a backup or a shadow copy in Vista.

I do suggest you post this in the office group as you will find more
expertise with this type of problem.
