trying to connect to 2003 server using remote desktop on XP machine. I can 2
different erro messages depending upon the way i remote in. If i use the
mstsc.exe /console (from the "run" box) i get the error in the subject above.
If i just use the XP remote desktop connection I get the error The client
can't connect to the remote computer.

I have determined through netstat -a that the adapter is not listening on
port 3389. How do i get it to listen?

I have checked the box for allowing remote access. the user account is local
to the server (it can log on locally), it is a member of the remote desktop
users group, it is an administrator on the network and locally on the server.

terminal services is running and i think configured properly. I need a
solution yesterday!!! can anyone help? i have read the posts back to 2006 and
that is how i found the problem in netstat -a.

RE: this computer can't connect to the remote computer

I managed to fix this on my own. it appears that 2003 server at some point
changed the port number that RDP listens on. netstat -a does not show the
3389 port, however netstat -an does show the port as listening. netstat -a
shows ms-wbt-server in the place of port 3389. by editing the registry, i
changed the port to 3389, and now i can connect.
