some type of scandisk?

Hi,

Just a silly question- I've made file backups to DVD, and now cannot copy
the files back.
Is there anything like the old MS scandisk for Vista Ultimate 64?
or do I have to go to some file recovery program?

The disk directory reads on almost all my disks, but not all the files will
come back.

Thanks.

Re: some type of scandisk?

You made B/U to DVD - please, tell us what software you were using?
Typically, you would need the same software to do the restore. The old
SCANDISK still exists, as far as I know - but that will not help you. This
is not what that program was for, SCANDISK is used to check and verify HD
filesystems, not the data on them, and not Optical Disk filesystems. Of
course, if the filesystem is corrupt, your data will also be gone, but if
the filesystem is verified as O.K that is no guarrantee that your data is
O.K

When using B/U software it is rather important to use that same program to
also verify the data that is being backed up. There is after all little
reason to store it in a safe place if you cannot read it back in the end.

If your B/U consists of files copied by the system utilities ( Copy and
burn?), then you should check that the disk(s) and the drive(s) all are
clean, and try reading from the same drive (if you have several) that you
used to write.

If this doesn't work, you may have to accept that you 'botched' it
somewhere?

Oh, and in the event that you are dual-booting and made the backup to disk
via InCD on a 32bit system, that module isn't working on a 64bit system.

Re: some type of scandisk?

The Vista equivalent is chkdsk. Here is a link to the wikipedia article
http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Scandisk
Wikipedia has articles on virtualy everything. A simple search will turn
them up.

Re: some type of scandisk?

Hi,

I used the Media Center data disk option.
A couple of disks out of about 100 are not recognized by Vista. (no dual
boot- nice and simple)
I guess I write them off.
I'll keep them for a while, since I've noticed that different physical
drives will read some disks.
I may have made them on the system that I sold to a relative. I'll have to
try them there before I relegate them to the 'coaster' pile.

thanks anyway.

Re: some type of scandisk?

I have not tried doing it that way, so couldn't comment on that. If that
utility gives you the option to chose the writing speed - go for the slow
one, and make a test first. Many have grumbled over burning inconsistencies
here over the years, it would seem that a large number of those go
remarkably quiet when they turn to 'Immation' media, personally, I don't
care much about the brand (as long as it is well known quality) but I have
to give them credit on this particular issue - no coasters at all, here! And
all disks have worked in all drives with me, so far. (Except for the odd bad
download, of course!)
