I recently deleted some software that had two copies of its self listed in
the remove progams screen. Now whenever I start win xp x64 a screen comes up
that says: "Ls delete program not found - skipping auto check." How do I get
rid of this screen? I searched the startup files in msconfig, but could not
find the batch file this screen is coming from. This happened before with a
partition magic batch file, it only went away by reformating my HD and
reinstalling everything

The instructions for correcting the Partition Magic problem are found on its
web site. Perhaps there are also suggestions for correcting the present
problem on that software provider's www site. Have you checked?

Re: Windows XP x64 Startup

Many years ago, I used to install a lot of shareware and Demo's and stuff
and sometimes I deleted them and then reinstalled them later on a different
drive, having multiple items being listed as a result. I don't know if this
applies, but usually any installation leaves the original install directory
in the Program Files directory when it is uninstalled, and this could
confuse any later uninstalls to not complete.

I suggest you read your disk(s) carefully and manually remove any
directories that does not have an active installation to it. Be carefull to
reboot every time, and then go back to the Software Removal list and check
anything that remains for Uninstall.

This could be time-consuming and something a registry cleaner would do much
quicker, but I am no fan of Registry Cleaners so refuse to pass on the
notion to you.

RE: Windows XP x64 Startup

Startup programs are located in the registry in the following two locations:
x64 programs
HKEY_LOCAL_MACHINE\SOFTWARE\Microsoft\Windows\CurrentVersion\Run
x86 programs
HKEY_LOCAL_MACHINE\SysWow64\SOFTWARE\Microsoft\Windows\CurrentVersion\Run

I highly advice that you make a backup of your registry before editing it
manually.

Re: Windows XP x64 Startup

Dear Tom,
Thanks for the info. Apparently when programs that have to be rebooted
when you either install or uninstall them put a command in the BootExecute
registry key. If for some reason the command in the BootExecute key cannot
find the program, the command will not be cleared from the registry. Symantec
has a program that takes you to the correct key, but I recommend closing the
program out and using reedit to go to the key the program pointed you to and
manually delete the one enrty that is appearing on the warning preboot
screen. I ran the program, and then I could not get on the internet. So, I
had to reset my DSL modem, etc.

RE: Windows XP x64 Startup

Carlos,
I found out that the problem was in this key:
HKLM\System\CurrentControlSet\Control\SessionManager\BootExecute
Thanks anyway.
