Hello all,
I am facing a problem with NTbackup, VSS and System State backup. No matter
if it performs a scheduled or immediate backup, the process freezes and never
ends. There is no error in the backup log (it's like the process is waiting
for something) and the only messages that appear in Event Viewer are VSS
related
"Unexpected error DeviceIoControl" "hr = 0x80070057" Event id 12289 Source VSS
Event id 12298, 12310 Source VSS
Volume Shadow Copy Service error: The I/O writes cannot be held during the
shadow copy creation period on volume C:\. The volume index in the shadow
copy set is 0. Error details: Open[0x00000000], Flush[0x00000000],
Release[0x80042314], OnRun[0x00000000].
etc.
Please note that the problem occurs only when System State is selected for
backup. I all other cases backup finishes without problems.
We have tried several things:
Install the latest NTBackup executable
Install the following VSS update:
A new Volume Shadow Copy Service update is now available that fixes various
Volume Shadow Copy Service problems in Windows Server 2003
http://support.microsoft.com/?id=913648
Run "vssadmin list writers" with no errors
The system is a Windows 2003 R2 Server with no SQL or MSDE installed
(although there are SPS services installed).
Any suggestion is most welcomed!
Thanks in advance
