Windows update changed account name

My laptop automatically ran a Windows 2000 update last week and it added a
new user account with the following format myusername.computername
Now when I login with myusername it takes me to the new account so have lost
my desktop and IE favourites etc. although the folders for my account still
exist. How can I get back to my original account named myusername?

Just log back in to your original profile...not the one that it somehow
defaulted to

Hello mikesgrapevine,

This can happen if the profile is damaged fo rwhatever reason (maybe the
update), so open in Explorer the old profile and copy the different folder
contents to the new created profile and you have it back.

Sounds like the profile is corrupt. If the profile is corrupt, you can
rename the profile(while logged on as local admin), then when the user logs
on again a new profile will be created from the image in \default user. You
can then copy over the items you need from the renamed profile. Copy the
folder contents not the folders themselves. When your sure you have all you
need, you can delete the renamed profile(s). Use the import function of your
e-mail software. Do not overwrite ntuser.dat

This does not work. When I try to login to my original account, myusername,
it just defaults to the new account myusername.computername

Thanks, this has partly solved my problem although I still need to import my
email messages. However, there are still problems with some programs which I
suspect is due to lost information from my original profile. Firstly IE6 will
not let me set the home page, it keeps going back to the Microsoft home page.
Secondly, I have lost the IP address from my Remote Desktop application used
for VPN connections. I can of course enter this again, but I am concerned
that I will have problems with other programs. Should I also copy the files
from User Data and Start Menu? There is also the problem of what to do with
all the contents of My Documents some of which probably contain path specific
info.

I will continue to try and get my new profile working properly, but it is
very annoying to find that the Windows Update has caused so many problems.
Ideally I would like to repair and use my old profile but I guess this is not
possible.
