SUPERAntiSpyware?

Notwithstanding the prolonged scanning time for a complete scan (24.31 min.
on my pc) and longer download time for updates, this program in overall
performance is worthy of replacing Ad-Aware SE Personal for WinME, IMHO.
I would appreciate other views or concurrence, for that matter.

Well, the first time I used SuperAntiSpyware for a complete scam, it took
more than 2 hours!!!! I'm using WinMe,700mhz machine, 320ram.From what I can
find researching free anti-spyware programs that will work with WinMe, this
is the only reliable non-Microsoft program available. I used AdAware SE
personal for many years, and am sorry to see it is no longer supported for
WinMe and older OS's. Are there other reliable free anti-spyware programs out
there besides SuperAntiSpyware?

I'm on Vista now <grrr> as there was nothing else around at the time.

I am working with 700 Mhz and 512 Mb's of RAM, but probably have less of a
start-up load and configured the program accordingly.
You still have 'Spybot' and 'SpywareBlaster' to rely on.
Another lengthy program is 'a-squared Free'.

I've heard some bad things about Vista and not so much for good things. The
TV says Leopard is better than Vista. I haven't tried it myself. I'll
stick with XP until I hear someone who knows what they're talking about
saying Vista is worthwhile. I'm sticking with ME at home until I can afford
XP (hopefully soon). There are new systems that come with XP. If you can't
find a good deal bundled in a new system, you could always buy a system
online with no OS and get XP separate.

Or you could download Ubuntu and have a better OS than either XP or
Vista Check it out at http://www.ubuntu.com/ It's free.

You can still order a system from the major manufacturers and get XP
loaded....you just have to request it. For me, I would rather have a clean
system and load the OS myself. All the "free" and "trial" crap that comes
on systems now is just a big royal pain in the posterior to remove. I still
haven't finished cleaning all the junk that came on my wife's laptop.
Having built my machine, it was a real pleasure to have nothing buy XP in a
virgin state to begin with!

I so agree! As you also say, laptops are probably the worst as few are
available "naked" with no OS installed. I gather that with some Dells one
has the option to choose to not have the crapware but to date Dells have
never been on my shopping list when buying laptops.

I so agree with that, Mike!! I had a Dell ordered for my wife to begin
with......after months of delays (which they were fully aware of when I
ordered!!!), I cancelled the order while our machine was being assembled and
due to ship that day, or so they said. I purchased an HP locally, got a
bigger, better machine with tons of extras (speakers, wireless optical
mouse, jump drive, case, etc.) for less money. Of course, she ended up with
Vista Home Premium, but, she likes it. <gag> I couldn't believe all the
'junk' that came on it and one has to make their own backup discs! I got a
250G USB HD and Acronis, she has all the backups she needs....from new and
pristine to loaded.

It was the same with my machine, so much crap to take off but as I had my
own XP I just did a wipe and install fresh <g>
I'll have to check with Kelly what came on her machine, Pete bought her a
laptop for Christmas and she has Vista Home Premium and she likes it, she
shows off if she brings it here because she knows I'd love to try it <g>
mind you I do let her log onto my network <g>

Advantages to buying a PC with the OS loaded:
- it should be ready to run straight out of the box
- it's normally an OEM version which tends to make it cheaper
- it tends to come with ads and trial software installed for the purpose of
making it cheaper
- the average user wouldn't even know how to install an OS
Advantages to buying a PC with no OS and getting an OS separate:
- it might run better if you know what you're doing and want a custom
install
- you're likely not getting an OEM and it should work better if you change
the PC
- it'll start clean with no junk software to remove
- you have actual OS disks

We got a few PCs with OEM software preloaded. Not only did they come with
software installed which we don't want, but they didn't come with OS disks.
One PC had us create backup disks with 6 CDs (not included). Another one
required about 13 CDs.

We got 3 identical IBM Thinkcentre machines which created 6 restore discs.
I used them to reformat one and they worked perfectly. I tried another one
and it crashed. The only thing odd about that one is we did upgrade the RAM
but that shouldn't crash the restore, and the somewhat random and vague
error message doesn't sound like a RAM problem..
