Problems with TS profiles

Hello, I'm testing a TS (2003 standard R2) in combination with a HP
thin client (5300) which has XP embedded on it. When I'm trying to
make 1 location for the user ts profiles I have a problem that it
creates the profile on the local TS and on the DC. On both the servers
(TS and DC) I changed the location of the TS Profiles via Group Policy
under Computer Configuration\Administrative Templates\Windows
Components\Terminal Services on BOTH the TS and the DC servers (The
profile path is f.e. \\dc\ts_profiles$\).

I logged off the thin client RDP session. Deleted the local profile on
the TS and also on the DC. Logged on again at the TS server. It builds
the start menu, etc.. When I logoff, the folders are created
(favorites, desktop, etc..). But these folders are created 2 times (on
the TS and the DC). When, for example, I put a file on the deskop (via
the folder on the DC) it does not show at the TS thin client, which is
logged in at that time. When I logoff and logon again, then it shows
the file. When I look for the location of that file, it is on the
LOCAL TS server and NOT at the DC server. When you logoff it seems to
synchronize these files to the DC server. When I delete the file on
the DC server user profile and logon again, it copies the file from
the local TS server to the DC server. I think this is strange. It
looks like the TS has a higher priority with user profiles then the DC
itself.

Is it not possible to have just ONE location of these TS user profiles
on the DC and not on 2 locations (because if there would be a big file
or folder on the desktop, it has to copy it over the network and slows
down the logoff and logon process).

I also tried to set it up via a user account properties (the location
of the profiles) but it doesn't help either.

Anyone any ideas?

Thanks in advance for any replies,

AntwanS.

Re: Problems with TS profiles

This is by design. It's the way roaming profiles work.

You have defined the roaming profile to be located on the DC. When
a user logs on to the TS, a copy of the romaing profile is stored
on the TS, in C:\Document and Settings. As long as the user is
logged on to the TS, changes to the profile are made to the local
copy of the profile. When the user logs off, changes are replicated
back to the roaming profile location on the DC.

If you want to, you can configure the TS to delete the locally
cached copy of the profile from the TS when the user logs off.

You can (and should) avoid that the profile contains user
documents, by redirecting the My Documents and Desktop folders to
another location, outside the profile.

All this can be done with a GPO:

Computer Configuration - Administrative Templates - System - User
profiles
"Delete cached copies of roaming profiles"

User Configuration - Windows Settings - Folder Redirection
Application Data
Desktop
My Documents
Start Menu

and because folder redirection settings are user settings, you will
also need to configure loopback processing of the GPO:

Computer Configuration - Administrative Templates - System - Group
Policy
"User Group Policy loopback processing mode" - "Replace"
