Terminal Services and Printer Shares

I have a windows 2003 server with 4 local workstations and 8 remote
workstations all running Windows XP Pro connecting with RDP over DSL. The
problem I am having involves printer shares at the remote locations. The
software we use depends on the printers being "shared" locally on the
server. The printers show up when the remote workstations log on but the
"share" intermittantly disappears causing lots of frustration with getting
reciepts printed and cash drawers opened. I have spoken to our software
company and they are aware of this problem but after 6 years they still
don't have a solution. I have contacted microsoft on several occasions and
they tell me to contact our software company.

Re: Terminal Services and Printer Shares

To clarify, is this shared printer a local printer on the server side?
Or is it a client side printer which gets remoted on the session when the
session is created?

Thanks,
Priya.

Adam,

Can you provide us a little more info on this, please? What I'm
wondering is:
1. are the receipt printers connected via USB to a PC/POS at the
remote location?
2. are the printers setup as local printers on your server as network
printers or local printers?
3. do your remote PCs have static or dynamic IPs?

Thanks,

Sidney

Re: Terminal Services and Printer Shares

The printer in question is connected to lpt1 on a windows xp home machine
and is shared on the local network. This machine connects to the TS through
RDP from a remote location. when the client connects, the printer shows up
on the TS where it is then shared again so the software can print to it.
It's about a 50/50 chance that the sharename is still there when the client
connects. when it disappears, the software cannot print to it. It is not
unusual for the sharename to just disappear even while the client is
connected.
