Yes, this makes it a lot clearer!
You can easily find out if your host computer recognises a
USB device. Simply connect a flash disk ("memory stick"),
then launch diskmgmt.msc. It will be clearly visible.
I suspect that the error message you see is deceptive. The
manufacturer of your program probably wanted to prevent
multiple users from using it simultaneously, e.g. by running a
number of concurrent sessions on a terminal server, so he
detects that your session is a terminal session and says
"No no, I won't let you do this!".
You can probably get around the problem by running a
WinVNC session instead of RDP. Not as secure, not as
fast and not as nice but still quite workable.
You might also want to try the "Shadow" option on your TS:
