Well, I am at the end of my rope with Vista...If this is not an easy
fix, I am done with it. Please if you are a site representitive try to
help me resolve this issue. I purchased a wireless router about 1 year
ago and have used it with great success with my XP home computer. I have
run into a huge roadblock since trying to make it work with Vista. I
purchased a new Sony Vaio top of the line computer so I know that is not
where the problem lies. It is obviously fault of the OS named Vista
pre-installed.

As of this moment I have had tremendous troubles with the Media player,
the recycle bin, my music files, the AV MODE, and just most recently now
my internet connection. This is the last straw. If this cannot be
quickly fixed I am done.

I hooked up the wireless just earlier today and have been using it
flawlessly most of the day. Just a few minutes ago things started going
awry. The first thing to happen was I woke it out of hybernation and
tried to restart the internet connection as it terminates it in
hybernation mode. I wondered why it didnt just start it back up
automatically for me so I didnt have to do it every time. So I checked
to see if the detect internet automatically button. It was off so I
checked it. Im not sure if that was what caused my problems, but my
internet would not start after that. The wireless connection would not
work after this...I tried everything starting from the connection
reseting unplugging and whatnot.

Everytime I click on the internet connection mini lauch icon on the
right taskbar or anywhere else throughout computer it tells me I am not
connected to the net. It says:

Connection status: Unknown
Server execution failed

So I click on connect to a network and it does not work...nothing
happens for about 2 minutes and then it finally pops up and says I am
not connected. It states:

Windows cannot find any networks

So it's as though it wants me to connect wirelessly. But, I am clearly
connected through a wire already!!! So I click on the diagnose and of
course it says:

Turn on wireless capability

So can someone tell me what the heck is going on before I lose my
mind???

LoL

Another problem just arose as well with my music files!! My very
precious music library which I transfered from my old XP desktop is
saying:

Windows Media Player cannot access the file. The file might be in use,
you might not have access to the computer where the file is stored, or
your proxy settings might not be correct.

This brings me to the problem I had with the AV MODE. I tried using it
to play a sinple shuffle of my music folder. It would not allow me to do
so without my copying all of my music into the public music folder. So I
got that done and tried doing a shuffle of my albums. It turns out you
cant do such a thing. Okay, so that is a sony VAIO issue there. But the
problem is now I cannot access any of my music! I sinply copied and
pasted my music into the file then I deleted the new copies because I
decided not to use the Sony AV MODE. So there is no reason my original
files should have been affected at all! And yet I can not access any of
them not a single one will play.

One last rant here about the compatibility of Vista with one of the top
major music streaming companies out there called Rhapsody. It is just
horrible, not one single problem ever arose while I was using XP Now it
crashes on a regular basis and is not working right now at all as
well!!!

Im one very ticked off customer and want a fix NOW! Where is this
supposed service pack??? When does it come out??? Will it fix even a
small amount of the problems we are all suffering or will we have to
wait till pack 2 to get relief???

Re: Very strange behavior from my Internet connection...

I had that same issue with my wireless card.
Updating my drivers to certified drivers from the chipset maker made all the
difference.

First off, reboot and see if that helps you. I see you tried hibernation -
try a full reboot and see what happens.

Did several attempts of rebooting both laptop and cable router and
wireless modem...nothing worked

My internet works fine but still says I am disconnected and shows the
red X over my icon

Im afraid if I reboot now I may lose my connection again!

Re: Very strange behavior from my Internet connection...

After reading your 'stream of consciousness' post I'm confused. You barely
get one problem mentioned and them you are on to another without fully
describing the first. Your nomenclature is also a bit difficult to decipher.
Calm down and approach each problem with a little more logic and a little
less narrative.

You said, "So it's as though it wants me to connect wirelessly. But, I am
clearly
connected through a wire already!!! So I click on the diagnose and of
course it says:..."

Trying to operate wireless and wired concurrently on the same machine is
your problem here. Don't do it. Pick one.

How did you transfer your music files from XP desktop and to what folder?
They should have been copied to c:\users\*yourusername*\music. Although this
is not required, Media Player will find them there with no intervention from
you which would be required if you copied them elsewhere. The error you
state sounds like you have shortcuts copied but not the actual files.

I don't understand what "copied and pasted my music into the file" means. It
makes no sense to me. And then you deleted the new copies...huh? Where are
your files? Can you open the folder and see them there? Pick a player and
get that to work.

Not enough information. If it crashes there will be errors noted in the
event viewer. What are they? Are your songs protected and therefore you need
to download licenses? Did this happen when you were trying to operate on two
different network segments at a time through concurrent wireless and wired
connections?

The service pack is not going to help you, and if you were taking all these
actions on a new XP machine, you would be having the same difficulty as near
as I can tell.

Pick a connection method then troubleshoot it only and post here with make
and model, errors, specific actions and the like. Then move on to the next
issue. Post here, etc. The problem isn't Vista. I have both a wired and
wireless network and full music library functioning beautifully and shared
between an upgraded XP to Vista PC, XP laptop and Xbox 360. No gnashing of
teeth or rants against Vista were involved, but then I didn't hook up wired
and wireless to the same machine, put it into hibernation, then copy
shortcuts from one machine to another, then delete the files and expect them
to play. You get the idea...It is YOUR mess.

Re: Very strange behavior from my Internet connection...

See if disabling "hibernate" solves your problem.
