remotely accessing terminal services using a satellite connection...

We have a dealer who has a high speed internet connection via satellite. He
complains about how slow his terminal server connection is as he can type
well ahead of the cursor etc...

No one else on regular high speed connections has reported this same issue,
however, we had a dealer a few years back in Colorado who also had a high
speed satellite connection and complained about the exact same thing...

Could it be that terminal server sessions made over satellite internet
connections suffer because of the latency involved? Could it be for this
reason that real-time terminal server type applications suffer but things
like simple internet surfing and file downloading over satellite connections
are ok?

RDP has nothing to do with the type of connection. It relies on the speed of
the connection.

That sure sounds like a latency problem.
You can test latency with the "ping" command line utility.
Anything over a few hundred mS will induce perceived lag/slowness.

Most connections have a latency < 100mS, however some have latency
>400mS, which will induce sluggish response. The most common
conections with high latency are satellite and wireless
connections.

Nothing you can do about latency, unfortunately.

But wouldn't you also suspect that it must also depend on teh latencyt of
that connection - which has absolutely nothing to do with speed...

The reason I say this is purely because everyone I know who has high speed
at this company has said how fast it is. Heck - even some dial up users have
indicated that for dial up it is darn fast.

But this is now the 2nd time with a satellite user that they have complained
about it.

Thanks Vera. That makes sense. That must be what it is - and hence you are
right - there is really nothing I can do about it - which would also explain
why VOIP over a satellite internet connection is not that great - even
though is is possible.
