Is there an easy way to restore the taskmon.exe application ? I was trying
out a spyware program and it identified it as a piece of spyware.

My computer seems to run fine without it.

Just extract it from your CD
or your windows\options\cabs folder if you have one

Re: Deleted Taskmon.exe from Windows directory, How to restore ?

The valid taskmon.exe is located in the Windows folder. The MyDoom worm may create
a bogus one in the Windows\System folder.

Extract the file from the .cab files on your Windows CD, or from the .cab file
location on your hard drive, to the Windows folder, using the"Extract one file"
option of System File Checker (SFC).

Using SFC to extract a file:

Re: Deleted Taskmon.exe from Windows directory, How to restore ?

Well that worked out well, thanks for the links explaining what to do.

When I ran the SFC to scan all windows files, it identified "Setupx.dll" in
Windows\System as requiring repair. Is this safe to do, or has this file
been modified since original issue. The modified date on my current file is
April 23, 1999, which is pretty old, but am I going to end up restoring to
an even older version ?.

Re: Deleted Taskmon.exe from Windows directory, How to restore ?

Well I saw there was a backup option when you request a repair. All went
well, the restored file is the same size and date as the original.file.

Thanks again, for the support.

Re: Deleted Taskmon.exe from Windows directory, How to restore ?

Do not use SFC for scanning all Windows files....it is buggy, and besides, you have
not kept its database up to date for that usage. Just use it for extracting single
files when necessary.

Re: Deleted Taskmon.exe from Windows directory, How to restore ?

I guess I should have waited for a respobse. Some excellent article
references telling me not to do what I just did. I'll restore the backup
version. Thanks for the heads up.
