I am running windows 2003 sp2 terminal services. I have been having some
roaming profiles issues with my end users. When I go to remove a profile from
the ts server i get ntuser.dat in use by another process etc. The user is not
logged on of course. how do I remove this profile from the ts server without
having to reboot the server. as of now I have to reboot the ts to do this and
even that sometimes does not work.

Make sure you run the User Profile Hive Cleanup utility on this server (I
also run it on all my workstations) - see if that helps.

You mention "roaming profiles" - I hope you mean "Terminal Services
Profiles" - as otherwise you probably have other problems. Set a different
path for TS profiles in ADUC for each user who accesses TS.

Re: Users profiles

Roaming Profiles are notorious for being problematic. Start by using
UPHCLEAN, to see if that will help you. Using Folder Redirection to redirect
My Documents, Desktop, Start Menu & AppData to the network are also common
things that administrators do to combat user profiles.

Often, users end up resorting to using Hybrid Profiles via Login Consultants
Flex Profile Kit, which merges user specific settings with a Mandatory
Profile at logon, then saves those settings at logoff. Companies like mine,
Sepago and RTOsoftware make commerical profile solutions, if one needs a
supported solution.

I've run into this a lot. What sometimes works is to log onto the server
as administrator. Open the properties of the folder with the roaming
profile. Select the Security tab. Disregard any error messages. Select
the Advanced option. Go to the Owner tab. Change it to an administrator
ID and then use the advanced option to make the changes on all files and
folders.

This is from memory, so it may not be 100% accurate in terminology. I've
found it works about 50% of the time...

BTW, I fully support the suggestion for UPHCLEAN. It's a "must have" on
TS servers....
